13 күн бұрынMore than a week after Calgary’s critical water main break, which sparked pleas for people to conserve water under tight restrictions, city officials say it will now take three to five more weeks. Citing investigations that revealed more areas of the pipe need to be repaired than initially anticipated, city officials say there will be more details to come on the water conservation strategy as they aim to repair the newly found areas of concern. Calgary’s mayor has already warned water use has been trending up since last Saturday and she says more restrictions could come in place if that doesn’t come down.
The second day of the G7 summit saw history being made with Pope Francis addressing world leaders at the event for the first time. As the world’s cameras were focused on the pontiff, Canadians were closely watching the summit’s sidelines - specifically Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the pair met for the first time face-to-face since Trudeau publicly accused India’s government of involvement of the assassination of a Canadian Sikh activist. Mackenzie Gray has more.
The war in Gaza has sparked fears of a wider regional conflict since the deadly Oct. 7 attacks led by Hamas, through another proxy led by Iran. With the current escalation, Israel has issued more stern warnings it will defend its borders. Crystal Goomansingh reports.
About 90 countries and organizations are meeting this weekend in Switzerland for a Ukraine peace summit, with the big question centred around how to end Russia’s war. President Vladimir Putin is not invited to the table, but as Mike Armstrong explains, Putin is still making major demands.

For our mayor making a blanket statement about how calgarians are not doing their part with the water shortage is unacceptable. For those of us who are doing our part by taking one short shower every 2 weeks and washing dishes only when there's no dishes left, and only doing laundry when absolutely necessary, is a slap to our faces.

No backup plan for a watermain thst serves the majority of Calgary. Our government is asleep at the wheel. More weeks of no outdoor watering? Will the City pay residents for dead sod and landscaping? Also, the Stampede cannot go on.

Calgary Stampede is 3 weeks away, with 5 weeks of repairs. When the visitors turn up for Stampede and to help keep the water usage down, restaurants will need to tell their customers they will have to lick the plate clean. They will need to tell them that we don't have the water to run the dishwashers anymore.

Disposable plates and cutlery. Encourage living like cowboys in terms of showering and baths. The Glenmore plant is providing 80% of current requirements so we really only need to somehow transfer the difference from the Bearspaw plant into the system. The military is actually trained in laying down temporary surface lines so maybe just closing a few streets and the military's help could help compensate. What could be done in the weeks before the Stampede needs to be considered now. Note, those inspection robots that can now be driven through the empty lines can only reach as far as their wires can go which isn't much compared to the length of the pipe so there's probably far more flaws yet to be found. Presumably, if another segment is cut out with those five flaws they've found, more of the pipes can be evaluated by the robots but this also means the repair time might be extended yet again. I'd like to know why the current inspection method with the acoustic sensors aren't picking up these flaws and what the state of the art in monitoring is now. As to why the line is experiencing so many flaws so early in it's expected life, yes that needs to be studied but without suitable monitoring, problems will always catch us by surprise.

If these water main pipes aren't meeting their timeline expectations, is the city mayor looking into who supplied these pipes and what this company is doing to make their promises right. Or are the taxpayers just to suppose to eat their poor decisions. Money for an arena, which we voted against, yet no backup for problems to water or electrical needs. They should start putting in another pipeline right away, they can take another 5 meters and put in the same right of way. Just ignore the othe five spots they found, it will hold up till a new pipeline in built. An eleven kilometers pipeline shouldn't take that long to build. Whoever said that the pipeline had a hundred years lifespan was obviously lying, it's only been 49 years.

I remember working at a job,. That I will not name. And I knew someone There who was chatting about this pipe and how we have to wait to see what happens. He knew someone who had knowledge of the pipe having problems but could not just start digging up everything to find the problem... this was almost 10 years ago. So the city knew about a problem with the pipe for a long time. Could there have been something done to prevent this sudden problem we face now with the water pipe?

@@ianmackie8959 when piping is “NDT tested” you know exactly what’s going on with it and these things don’t happen. I work in industry and we repair these things all the time. There’s no excuse for having incompetence working on this project. It is clearly poorly planned, and you never have a utility system fed from one source with one huge line. I been watering and using probably 200-300 gallons a day 😅 with out problem. Got a 3000 gallon water tank in my back yard and 2 500 gallon small tanks I use on a trailer I drive to stavly Alberta they got a pump house u can fill up tanks with for free. Then u drive back to Calgary and pump the water into the 3000 gallon tank takes about 1 hr to fill 1000 gallons at the pump house and about 3 hrs of driveing for there and back. Did 3 trips 1 day filled up the 3000 gallons and using it to water plants and grass a and anything that need water flushing toilets Keep in mind this water is not drinkable so I still need to use water for drinking and washing dishes

With no water for the tourists to the Calgary Stampede, it would be best to simply cancel the event and shut down the hotels and motels reservations for non-city tourists like they did during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

You can water with brown water, right? I'm not sure which cleaners you can use, though, maybe biodegradable. You will eventually need to do laundry.

& stores never put limits on how much water a single person can purchase smh. Sudden profiteering & hoarding will insure the shelves are empty quickly leaving tons of folks without any water . Seen this during covid . Hoarding toilet paper how pathetic can one be .. It’s always Karen’s 🤦

The "Buck' stops at the Mayor's office. City council and this useless Mayor should have taken a proactive approach on the city's infrastructure. With the massive migration into this city, they instead push through blanket rezoning to further put strain on it.
