It's not a "Liberal" scandal. It's been going on forever. I spent almost 2 years going to MP Keith Ashfield's condo in Ottawa with his mistress. I drank his booze and ate his food every day. He was at that time negotiating the fishing rights between the EU and Canada. He was dealing with heart disease and cancer at the time and missed negotiations for two years in a row. He wasn't very informed about fishing, in fact he didn't even like the taste of fish...we ate pork chops or chicken breasts or prime rib, but he never had fish in the house. ALL he cared about was the extra money added to his cheque for being a Cabinet Minister. He didn't care how he voted or what the issue was, he voted the way the "whip" told him to. He considered himself a "good soldier" for staying late at night to vote as the whip instructed. Sometimes it's not outright collusion that makes MP's vulnerable but fear of their own human failings. I literally had to explain to this Conservative Cabinet Minister's mistress that adultery is not a "family value". I listened to him talk openly on speaker phone about his medical conditions, trade negotiations, political gossip, etc etc. Even at that time head of CSIS was issuing warnings about vulnerable MP's. Keith's cell phone number was almost the same as his constituency office...I imagined that the day after the election his staff had to call Bell to arrange telephones for the new MP and his staff (a landline for the office, a fax line, a cell phone for the MP...all were just one number apart). He was terrified of being caught but he couldn't care less about actual policy other that in the most partisan of ways. He liked the fanaticism of politics...the sport of it. He liked the prestige, the paycheque and the pension. He openly talked about having being elected because he was a "likeable" guy backed by his business friends in Fredericton. His first priority was not to constituents or policy or principle it was to fame and fortune. And yes, I was scared at that time. I didn't know if I was going to get a visit from CSIS or the RCMP, but I wasn't the one doing harm to my wife or family or country.
