Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered an apology during question period in the House of Commons Wednesday, admitting to his government's "terrible error" in not only allowing a Second World War veteran, who fought for a Nazi unit, to sit in Parliament on Friday, but in the House rising to honour him, too.
Trudeau's statement comes a day after House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota announced his resignation amid the international controversy. Rota called out 98-year-old Hunka Yaroslav, by name, and paid tribute him - prompting supposedly "unaware" MPs to applaud and cheer for the Nazi.
"All of us who were in this House on Friday regret deeply having stood and clapped even though we did so unaware of the context," Trudeau said.
Senior Liberals, the NDP, the Bloc Québécois and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre all urged Trudeau to apologize for this "embarrassment" and for Rota to resign after he invited Hunka during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Ottawa.
“I must step down as your Speaker. I reiterate my profound regret for my error in recognizing an individual in the House,” Rota said in his Tuesday remarks. “That public recognition has caused pain to individuals and communities, including the Jewish community in Canada and around the world, in addition to survivors of Nazi atrocities in Poland, among other nations. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”

@@user-wm5re7fn2vit is more complicated than that. Yes is true some nationalists sided with the Nazis but because they were being threatened by the soviets and recently genocided by them. Over 4 million Ukrainians were starved to death by the soviets. They were desperate to fight them and liberate their land so when the Nazis arrived they fought the Russians until the Nazis also invaded them. The history in that region is extremely complicated and not so simple like we believe it is. This is still no excuse to give a standing ovation to someone who potentially committed war crimes.

Didn't vote the last two elections because I couldn't in good conscience vote for Trudeau again, but couldn't yet bring myself to the point of voting PC for the first time in my life. SO THERE NOW! Trudeaus destroyed my party and his backroom deals with Singh and the NDP to stay in power has only made things worse. I am a Russian Canadian citizen! (Not from Russia, but from one of the former Soviet Union countries)The Soviet Union lost the most people in WW2. My grandparents fought against the Nazis and our Prime Minister is giving standing ovations to the killer of our people, because he fought against Russians. I am speechless... How big is your hate for Russians, you do not think that "against Russians" means "against Canada" (as they were allies in WW2)! No apology for us, Russian people? Why is Russia /Russians blamed for what happened in Canada? THIS WAS A RUSSIAN PROPAGANDA? Did Putin bring all the Nazis to Canada? Did he force you to give standing ovations to this horrible person? So disgusting!

I am glad you commented, I have been most disappointed on the comments, no apology to Russia or Russians, no one seems to notice. 27 million dead. I would say no liking Russians is fundamental to people of that ideology. It is why he was invited, they all new who he was. I am so disgusted.

With all the security detail that follows the PM 24/7, it is not possible that they did not know who Hunka was. Also his granddaughter posted a photo of Hunka waiting to meet Zelensky and Trudeau in the reception hall before he entered the house of commons.

Very shocked how Global news is allowing people to comment. Usually our media shuts down our speech on controversial topics.

Canadians should desire nothing less than this man's resignation. The fact he hasn't fallen on his sword shows the absolute disdain he has for the Canadian people.
