Poilievre grills Trudeau on interest rate hike, PM defends “rental and dental” support

Speaking during question period on Wednesday, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and Conservative MP Adam Chambers pressed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Liberal measures against inflation, referencing the Bank of Canada’s sixth interest rate hike of the year.
“Today, rates went up another half point, meaning many families will be handing their keys to the bank because they won’t be able to afford those bills,” Poilievre said. “Has the Prime Minister been briefed by his officials on how many Canadians will lose their homes because of the higher interest rates the inflationary rates have caused?”
Trudeau defended the government’s economic policies with the GST tax relief, senior dental care and low-income renter support amid global rising inflation rates, in turn asking why Conservatives are not supporting Canadians on "rental and dental.”
“We’re going to continue to make sure that we have the capacity to respond if the economic situation worsens for Canadians in the coming months,” Trudeau said.

Increased losses for portfolios this quarter are predicted by market drops, skyrocketing inflation, a major interest rate hike by the Fed, and rising treasury rates. How can I profit from the volatile market right now? I'm still considering whether to sell my million dollar bond and stock account.

Concentrate on two main goals. To start protecting yourself, learn when to sell stocks to reduce losses and maximize gains. Second, get ready to profit when the market recovers. I suggest having a conversation with a broker or financial advisor.

Yes, I've been in touch with a financial analyst ever since I covid. Investing in trending companies is relatively easy today; the trick is determining when to purchase and sell. I started with a $300K reserve that was initially dormant; my adviser decides when to enter and exit my portfolio; since then, I have accumulated over a million dollars.

@@AUG_XZABER 😂😂😂 American here to correct your facts. Our country prospered in spite of the government. While Europe was at war and destroyed their economies, American was productive, everyone was working, Americans were saving. There was nothing to buy because the American economy was a war economy. Also the tax rates were symbolic because no one paid those high tax rates, which is a whole other story that I encourage you look into. To make a long story short, it was easy to write a provision into the tax code to be exempted. The most important detail you missed was that America did not have debt during that time. We had virtually zero. Two years ago we had 21T and now we have 31Trillion in debt that we still owe, because both of our war mongering parties love putting their imperialist war games on Americas credit card + giving free stuff for votes. The lesson to learn from America’s prosperity is that you need a productive society where everyone is producing and saving their money ; should be common sense but unfortunately we live in world where apparently you don’t have to work to earn something anymore because you can pass the tab along to some fool and citizens who aren't born yet.

@@-whackd The government is responsible for their response and the damage it has caused and continues to cause. Of course now they’ll blame the fallout on “the pandemic” which they used to justify massive deficit spending and money printing to pay people who are at an extraordinarily low risk to not work. Big Pharma got rich and Trudeau got to be a dictator, just like he’s always dreamed. Pfizer just admitted the other day that they never even tested their “vaccines” effectiveness in preventing transmission - which was, as you’ll recall, the basis for the vaccine mandates in the first place. The Liberals only gives large money to their rich elite friends. They printed a lot of money, then reinvested that money, the liberals are responsible for the rise in housing. The elite landlords assets rise in price and they make more money from inflation. As housing prices increase, so to is housing taxes. Housing cost more due to Liberals spending, so the landlords housing taxes increases dramatically. Renters can't afford to rent in big cities and metropolis so the Liberals increase taxes from other rural areas to pay for the rents of low income owners that will go to the elite landlords who's assets have increase who will then spend more in taxes that will go back in the pockets of the Liberal government again because taxing for someone else's rental and housing taxes weren't being taxed enough. You see how the vicious cycles goes. It's just more money for Justin Trudeau who increased his salary by 60% during the Pandemic where people were forced out of a job. Taxation if theft and we need No Government because it's Governments who created the problem in the first place.

IS it hoping people will stop eating/feeding their kids, or driving to work? This response by the central bank is ludicrous. Lower there freaking price of my butter and bread.

You get dental care for most the jobs you work for in this country. Dental care is not something tax payers want to see there money supporting! A tax payer is someone that rolls out of bed and goes to work and they should not have to support people whom don't wish to do the same thing and contribute in a positive way to our nation. Also if your an immigrant in this country they should not be paid for an entire year on the tax payer and the homeless need to be put into mental heath facility's. My last point is if your a company that can't keep there doors open you need to close them and cash out not get a government handout that was even given to the riches people / company's and an app that was 125 times the price if anyone else would have done it. The biggest thing we all learned or at least I learned during this pandemic is that We abuse our old people in this country the very people whom built what we have today in nursing homes and even with pensions for the poorest of them. When you get old the system should be there for you while still trying to let you be independent till your not able to anymore. Also if your going to pay an immigrant to come to Canada they should not receive anymore than a person on welfare system.

To our PM - prices are up everywhere. I have stopped eating certain fruits and vegetables because the price is too expensive. Therefore, in order to make ends meet, I have reduced my caloric intake and switched to cheaper foods in the hopes things get better (rural Canadian that does not live close to a major metropolitan centre). All my bills are up and my food is down - something had to give. I find it interesting that proper food is the very thing that is conducive for good health and is getting beyond reach, which in turn will put pressure on the medical system when people consistently eat poorly, forcing taxes to be raised again to pay for the system that the government had a hand in destabilizing. Incompetence comes in many shapes and colours - Canada's incompetence comes in Liberal red and is named Justin Trudeau. The point that is missed by everyone in government, and all of us voting for the various parties, is that the Bank of Canada can try to curb spending. But the government is there to take care of the people of this country. At least the Liberals try to do that. But NO government has any control over inflation, other than trying to financially take care of those who need help, which Conservatives claim drives inflation up. So then, if the Conservatives don't spend to support the lower, working classes, does this mean they will go into further debt, bankruptcy, etc.? What people have to realise is it is not governments that bring on inflation, it is we the people who do that to ourselves because we are bombarded by businesses that continually want us to by their products, whether we need them or not. All inflation is homegrown, because we are the ones spending, not the government. Governments need to spend, or cut services to those who need it. Canadians want to see inflation go down, start buying locally grown foods instead of expensive imported foods, especially out of season ones. If dairy is too high, demand that it be open to competiton from areas where it's cheaper. Stop pressuring people into believing they have to own their own home: they don't, and not owning could well put them on their way to financial freedom. Why do we need the biggest, most expensive truck each year. We don't. Buy one, drive it until it dies. We don't need new things just because we are told we do. If we stopped buying things we want just because we want them, not because we need them, prices would fall. Companies can't sell things that people aren't buying, so the prices will come down. Don't ask the government to fix this. This is Canadians' fault, not our government's. We did this to ourselves, and from the comments I see here, we want to continue to do it to ourselves. If you are in debt, can't afford to pay the interest, can't afford to buy your food because of the debt, who's fault is that? It's not the governments. Everyone in this country deserves to have a roof over their head, food on their table, clothes on their backs. But the greater majority do not have the financial means to do this because we are not really "middle class." We are working class people living in a middle class country. The cost of things is based on the middle classes, especailly the upper-middle class. Since prices reflect the minority, not the reality for the majority, it is the government who needs to help us out. That means spending money. If you don't want the government to spend money, then the cost of living needs to refelct the financial reality of the majority of Canadians, not the minority.

A few things: 1. Governments have absolute control over inflation. Inflation doesn't magically happen by itself. Trudeau printed and gave away more money than literally every PM combined and are continuing to do that. 2. Do you think the next generation is going to afford housing? You and I both know they sure won't. Why? Because of the way the current liberal government has handled housing in the past 5 years. 3. On top of everything, the Liberals are hitting Canadians with increased taxes during a time many people cannot afford it. For what reason? Simply because they can. That said, Conservatives have their own issues too but there is literally no government more incompetent than the current Liberal government in the history of the country.

@@ishaanpatel3008 i 1. No, inflation doesn't happen by itself. Which is the point of my comments. We, the people, promote and incite inflation. But yes, the this government had to print and spend a lot of money. And unlike any government before it, it had to make tough decisions. Got help us if we had of had someone like Scheer in power. The "middle" and upper classes would have happily gone on while the lower and working classes would have gone even further down the hole. The Liberals did what needed to be done. But that did not cause the inflationary process we are going through now. It's a simple case of supply and demand driving up prices, and people still thinking they can just buy, buy whatever they want, money or no money. The Bank of Canada unsderstands this, thus is trying to curb our spending habits by rasining interest rates. 2. The house fiasco in this country was not started by the Liberals. The totally out=of-control houseing and rental costs started under the Conservatives, who in their misguided beliefs, let them soar out of control rather than try to keep them in control. That many Canadians will not be able to buy a house is true. But I have two nieces, both married, both in their mid 30s, both with equivalent incomes. One owns a house, the other didn't. Guess who's better off financially? The one who doesn't own the house. Instead of buying, they a decent apartment at a good rent. Then they invest and save all that money that normally would be spent on interest, property taxes, maintenance, etc. They travel every year (pre-COVID), and have a net worth of almost 1 million. The other niece has not savings, no life experiences, but they do own a home. Only Norway pressure people into buying a home more than Canada. I know a lot of young people who would not buy a home, even if they could for 50,000$C. 3. Yes, the Liberals are raising taxers, but from what I see, these tax increases are not hurting me, a low income earner (disabled). But the ones I see complaining are the upper income earners. And they complain loud enough, that like the 'Middle Class" revolutions of the past, they are inciting the lower and working classes into believing this is hurthing them, too. It's not. In other words, this is not a Liberal thing, it is not a Conservative thing, it is what many have argued as the failuer of the Free Market Capitalist system. And it has failed, miserably so.
