Poilievre slams Trudeau government for "woke hypocrisy"

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault passionately argued for a price on pollution during question period in the House of Commons on Thursday, saying that “If woke means standing up for the future of my children and grandchildren so that they have access to clean air and clean water - then so be it.”
“He’s woke and so Canadians are broke,” replied Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre. “I’ll tell you what woke means in practice: His government approved dumping millions of litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River, that’s what woke means. Woke means charging a single mom higher costs to drive to work and feed her kids while the prime minister jets around using Canadian tax dollars to pump emissions into our atmosphere - that is the woke hypocrisy across the way,” Poilievre continued.
Conservatives and Liberals also clashed over the new design of the new Canadian passport, which was revealed on Wednesday. Conservative MP John Nator asked why images of Terry Fox, Vimy Ridge and Nellie McClung, which were all in the previous iteration of the passport, were removed by the new design. “Why is this Liberal government so intent on erasing Canadian history from our passport?" Nator asked.
Karina Gould, the minister for families, replied to Nator saying “This is emblematic of how the Conservatives acted when they were in government - they spent more time on symbols than on action,” Gould said. She also added that “When the Terry Fox statue was desecrated, what did [the Conservatives] do? They cheered on the convoy,” she argued.

Well are you such a lightweight that you need these things explained to you? Can't figure out for yourself, how carbon taxes are supposed to work on a society? Maybe read up on Sweden's experience with them since 1991. That and other emissions reducing protocols they've worked with over the years. To the point where they are a couple years away from being a 'zero emissions' country. Thank goodness Mr. PP is happy to tell you what to think! Relieves you of a tremendous responsibility doesn't it?

Right! It's sickening how out of touch they are with ordinary citizens & seniors! As a senior myself, I am no longer able to pay my rent & there is nothing cheaper out there. I have no cable TV and no money for food, medicine or other necessary items! There should be drastic increase in our pensions to get up to speed with inflation! Meanwhile the Liberals just gave 59 billion $ to Ukraine & part of it to was to pay for senior pensions there!! This is outrageous & unacceptable!

Look at what the Ontario conservatives are doing to seniors. Forcing patients to go to long term care 100s of miles from family/friends to save money. Karina, don't forget about funds spent by PM on his luxury vacations. Those funds could help hiring more personnel, buying more equipment for stopping Alberta's fires, to help single mom. PM is talking too much, expressing his concerns about middle class. In reality, he is taking those funds from middle class and spending them on beloved himself.

So vote for someone that actually wants to better represent the people of a riding. Someone that actually meets with and asks what the people want to see. Pick an MP that is more than just another faceless seat for "X" party. Get involved with signing some of the petitions on the Government website. There are a lot better ways to get your voice heard than ranting in a KZfaq comments section.

He's ALWAYS said that, in fact he introduced the motion several times. But again, thats a PROVINCIAL tax. The feds only said we have to price carbon. A cap and trade system is what handled acid rain and every province was free to do that. The liberals in ontario had it, Doug Ford killed it and taxed consumers instead and got MORE votes the next time. Quebec has a cap and trade and so the carbon tax is frozen at four percent. The big issue is that EVERY country now prices carbon. Which means when Pollievre cancels it and claims 'technology' will be used instead, then all our trading partners are going to likely have something to say about it.

Steve, our largest trading partner doesn't have a Federal Carbon Tax but that being said because Canada's emissions are so miniscule (1'2% of world emissions) that strangling Canadians with tyrannical levels of carbon taxes will have miniscule results it probably makes more sense to do other things like invest in technologies that along with LNG could be exported to countries where noticeable differences could be achieved.

And right now they are investing SO heavily that it counts as a tax much higher than our carbon tax. As for options, there is no such thing as 'technology', that doesn't even make sense. What you are suggesting is that WE should pay through our taxes..wait, what....for oil companies upgrades. So whats the difference between Pollievre giving billions to oil companies for them to buy new technology and a carbon tax. The difference is that right now poor canadians get a rebate, or did before our province stole it. What makes more sense of course is a cap and trade program, which ALL provinces were free to take, and only one province did. Want to know who elses emissions are tiny? Lichtenstein. But they still price carbon. How about Jordan. Virtually NO emissions but they have a carbon market that makes us look like the third world. There is only ONE taxpayer. So Pollievres 'we should invest in technology' is first of all what the carbon tax is all about. And for point of reference, we shouldn'te ven TALK about Canada, becaues the ONLY province where emissions haven't gone down in the past twenty years is Alberta. So if anything ONLY Alberta should be payign the tax, which would be the most fair, because thats a province that refuses to even have a provincial sales tax. Despite having gotten more federal money for the past three years than ANY other province, including Quebec.

And the US "spending" (notice I avoided the Liberal word of the day "investing") heavily by spending $1.3 Trillion in green infrastructure with the absurdly named "Inflation Reduction Act" will only cause more inflation. Canada could cease to exist and there wouldc be no meaningful reduction in CO2 emmissions on the planet so taxing Canadians to death is sheer foolishness.

I live in Alberta. I had according to my dashboard 160 km left till empty yesterday when I stopped in at the Petro-Can. I put $20 worth of regular into the tank. My dashboard then said I had 310 km till empty. So I am getting, on my fairly fuel-efficient car, 7.5 km per dollar. It's about a 14 km drive to work for me. So I expend $4 per workday in gasoline. That's with the provincial gas tax holiday!

@@firenze6752 So unless I am mistaken. You propose to mix anarchism (no government) with democratic voting. So, Your first problem would be implementing some kind of safe online voting model that could not be abuse-able absent a government, How would you even know whom had a vote without some kind of government structure. What would they be voting on? Then a problem would be internet connect-ability. There are as of March of this year still 1.4 million homes in Canada without access to internet, and this is worse in rural area's. and without government regulations... There would likely be a lot more people unable to pay for internet. Then there is stuff the government does... like checking your food and water is safe, or a lot of people would die. Money would become pretty much worthless without the National bank. Making those that had hoarded it very unhappy. Laws, personal rights, property... pretty much all gone, and even if by some extremely unlikely chance it actually works. American's (and other foreign interests) looking to exploit Canada for their own benefit. Democracy is really not compatible with anarchy in any permeable way. Then again Capitalism is not really compatible either when you think about it, as those with wealth have a much greater say than their singular vote would have otherwise done.
