An Ontario driver who struck and killed a woman and her three young daughters nearly two years ago was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Monday.
The judge said the man had "gambled with other people's lives" when he took the wheel after consuming cannabis, and that his "cavalier attitude" towards driving laws called for a significant sentence. He had accumulated 15 driving infractions in the two-and-a-half years before the June 2020 crash that killed Karolina Ciasullo and her daughters.
Catherine McDonald reports on reaction for the family and why they feel there will never be any justice.

The misrepresentation of marijuana labels is interesting . It's been reported in mainstream media several times since legalization that legal marijuana products in Canada have been repeatedly sold with inaccurate labels. One news article I read highlighting the fact that one product contained five times the THC content compared to the label. Clearly a case where accountability for potential crimes as a result of legal use shouldn't necessarily be held by a voluntary drug user! Five times as potent as the label ? Wow. And how insane is it that this happened and is continuing to happen resulting in no criminal investigation/charges ? Even though the product in question undoubtedly exceeded the 30% THC legal limit. For that product to still be within legal limits it would have had to been labelled with 6% THC content or less . ..indicating the purchase was in fact made for medicinal and not recreational use ..lol. If you're buying legally sold labelled 6% THC products and are given something that has 5times the labelled THC amount ???....This is both voluntary and involuntary . ...and it's far more likely the product exceeded the legal limit of THC content . If true could result in unwanted and dangerous hallucinations . I stopped buying legal Canadian marijuana products specifically for this reason as i prefer a milder effect. I have smoked legal products labelled 10% THC that were clearly more potent than other products labelled at higher THC content . The fact that this is continuing to happen is absolutely disgusting !

it was extreme intoxication like not being capable of thinking if I recall correctly. Again people like you want to punish the person not the state of mind. People are put on trial for their state of mind at the time of an offence.. defences arise with what caused the person to do what they did and judge those reactions. Only absolute liabilities ignore the mind or defences. Again you dont seem to understand the legal system and how it judges people or puts sentence on them or the reasons. Someone who is plastered is not making decisions of their normal process and is under the influence of something altering their normal state of mind. the conditions that led them to become drunk should be considered but their actions while drunk should not weigh on mens rea unless they undertook to drunk such that they could do that act thus the intention was formed before loss of faculty.. this is no different than a temporary insanity defence and diverion.. and its also important to understand addictions are seen as mental health problems not decisions thus it plays into defence of the mind because the person is under the influence of something leading them to take a course of action they would not do if not suffering from that medical problem. The issue is that to punish additions doesnt treat addictions properly the premis is addiction are not a choice they are a medical disability. They are things people need treatment for not punishment for. Its important to understand this was for extreme intoxication if I recall correctly not simply having a few drinks. I would think these types of altered mind defences may give rice to other not criminally responsible setences as a division in treatment or medical sentencing to address the cause of the victimization.. recognizing the source of the creation of a victim was done through drugs and alchohol use not through the decisions of the person to victimize another. Liability and guilt is important in the cause of action not simply the result of action. Punishing events is not justice it is simply appeasing a dark and evil part of the human mind. Restorative justice, provides for the event to be comensated for and for people to be fixed to make society function again. Simply throwing someone in a room for an extended period of time is donjon justice and does nothing to address the social issues. The time in jail should reflect time to correct the behavior or psychosocial issues that made the person into someone that was a trigger for an event of victimization. When actual change has occured that person can then be paroled, the timelines are frankly arbitrary.

Agreed - it blows my mind to this day, that the sentence is so minimalist. He's 21 - he'll be out of prison by the age of 35 (for time already served). He can then go off, get an education, have a family and go on vacations whenever he pleases. That makes no sense whatsoever. Laws should be based around fairness - that sentence is not remotely fair to the deceased, nor to the surviving husband/grandparents etc. How the kid somehow was driving a vehicle with 15 driving infractions - is just ridiculous. He clearly didn't care at all - nor did his caregivers care, or were unable to control his access to car keys?

@@Bobofet241 yes this was my mistake I initially confused it with someone who ran into two kids and it stated that it was 3 years ago or something that is an error on my part. Thankyou didnt realize that was still in there. In that case it was a teen who did it. I attempted to remove that part as these case facts bring up another case when they are searched online. None the less if it happened last year I assume he had a 1 year pretrial detention unless he was given bail I would think the same facts as brought up during sentencing may have prevented bail being provided also as he is more or less deemed a reckless danger to society.

With a record like this guy had, the sentence should of been LIFE with no chance parole. He murdered those children and their Mom but instead of a gun or some other weapon. He used a car. From previous incidents he had a chance to correct himself. He didn't do it, he just got worse. He'll be out soon enough and he'll be able to do it again. And if he does do it again, this judge should serve the time with him. My heart goes out to the victims and their family.

Think about this... to the victim's family, friends, loved ones.. this IS A LIFE SENTENCE. the LIFE SENTENCE being: you'll never see them again, hear their laughter, watch you, graduate, first kiss, prom, get married, first promotion, etc. etc.... . When you're in prison on a life sentence, it's way more lenient, because... at least you still get to share through writing letters, visitation hours, etc. Family and friends of the victims are by default sentenced to a life sentence, whereas the driver isn't even sentenced to a life sentence in prison, a punishment that is already less than what the victim's loved ones are sentenced to....

They need to give heavier punishments per a life killed for situations like these. To wipe out for people off this planet three of which who had basically just begun life is Just straight up evil. This guy was a selfish pig and he deserved a life sentence for each life taken. Nice to know that in this country I can get killed by some erratic drunk driver and they will barely do any time.

I was hit by a car 6 years ago and my life was changed forever. The woman who hit me was not charged with anything because the statement from the one witness that the police took was a pack of lies. The drivers insurance even denied me proper care and meds.

I am very sorry to hear that. Is there any possibility of a re trial of the witness. Could sue the witness, the police would have the witness information and statement on file. Any relation between the witness and the driver. What angel was the witness on can they remember their original statement. What proof do they have as a witness. Do they have 202/20 eye site. Any possible medical condition that could cloud judgement.

@@bubbles3161 the police officer who did the report died. A witness who came forward to me and I encouraged her to go to the police they blew her off. The insurance got their hooks onto the witness who told me the driver was at fault and what happened. In her statement to them she changed her story. I am glad I kept her contact with me that was done over fb messenger. The police had their mind made up it was my fault from the start. Someone I know found out the driver was related to the cop who did the report. My neighbour was a cop and his comment about the report was it was a “lovely work of fiction”. There wasn’t even a report from the cop who spoke to me while I was lying on the road.

@@laurabailey1054. I read your comment earlier and I'm sorry to hear what happened. My comment was related to the driver who struck and killed a woman and her three young daughters. Sorry for any confusion. I read you're new comment and was glad to hear your friends helped figure out what really happened. Local police departments have started to recruit officer from outside the local area and they are moved as they decide where their skill set would be best suited. This change in policing was introduced for this very reason. Local police taking sides because they know the father of the son who was charged for example.
