A man whose three children were killed by a drunk driver in a crash in Vaughan, Ont. has died by suicide. Edward Lake was found deceased on Monday, the day after Father’s Day.
On Sunday, Edward’s wife Jennifer Neville-Lake shared a photo on social media showing their children’s grave. “Father’s Day 2022. This shouldn’t be real. It can’t be,” the tweet read.
The couple’s three children were killed in a crash in September 2015 caused by drunk driver Marco Muzzo. Nine-year-old Daniel Neville-Lake, his five-year-old brother Harrison, their two-year-old sister Milly and the children’s 65-year-old grandfather, Gary Neville, were killed in the collision.
Edward said in a statement at Muzzo’s sentencing that he had suffered from suicidal thoughts and anxiety since the crash.
If you or someone you know is in crisis and needs help, resources are available. In case of an emergency, please call 911 for immediate help.

I don't know how this poor woman finds the strength to carry on day after day. She lost her three precious children (the greatest loss a parent can endure), her father, and now her husband. 1978 we lost my sister right out of University, and our cousin by marriage. His wife, our first cousin, never recovered. Then decades later her one son committed suicide, the first on either side of our families. It's connected. But we were supposed to be beyond this by now as a society. MADD had just really got traction in 78, and ramped up from there in Canada. No family should have to deal with the irresponsible self inflicted actions of drunks who drive. No excuses.

It is horrendous what happens to the victims and their families. To die on Fathers Day with no children celebrating with you is about as tragic as life can be. But its always the same story with the media. The victims are remembered and who has survived continues in torment. Why don't they report the outcome of the drunk driver? What did the fine and trial cost him? Is he back on the road? He should be charged with manslaughter. The vehicle didn't kill those kids. HE DID.

Agreed. He was a grown man who knew he'd had too much to drink. He could have called a taxi. That simple choice would have saved so much grief. From what I read, I believe the driver was sentenced to 10 years, but was released after 5 or 6.

Unfortunately with such a sentence in a way it sends a message to the victim family that their children's lives were only worth approx. 2-1/2 years (+ sentence / # killed). That would weigh heavily on the surviving family and not only be a contributing factor here but a significant one as well. I hope the Judge can learn of this and have some effect to them, I can't imagine the Judge had a conscience nor ever will, their decision was equally as bad as the drunk driver imo.
@thedwightguy
@thedwightguy 2 жыл бұрын
Canada's sentencing guidelines may or may not have bonded the Judge's decision. In our families loss, the drunk driver was also killed. He had contributed NOTHING all his life to being on this planet. The two he took out were both over achievers and on the cusp of making great contributions to society. THAT sticks in my craw.
@Dobermanator
@Dobermanator 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedwightguy Sorry for your loss. I am certain there are precedents the Judge(s) use, and although I do not know what they are exactly, I am comfortable in asserting the maximum was not even close to being applied. The contributions to society I think are more in consideration for the accused in sentencing as opposed to the victims and I think that is for obvious reasons. The Judge would also weigh if there might be an appeal should they automatically throw the maximum at him. If he was a first time offender, likely he would get a much lower sentence which might be the case here. My argument to that is the first fatality be his first offence, and so on, (regardless they occurred at the same time) therefore allowing the Judge room to get much closer to the maximum. Otherwise, a "first time offender" which ploughed into and killed one person might receive the same sentence as someone that killed four people, that's just not right / just, but that's what I believe occurred here (until someone corrects me).

Correction for accuracy and transparency- Marco Muzzo is currently living at a community facility while working at his families businesses. He was defended by Brian Greenspan (one of the most prominent defence lawyers in Canada). Muzzo was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but served a 1/3 of that. As MADD notes "The short sentences imposed in some cases of impaired driving causing death or bodily harm, the generous credit given for pre-conviction imprisonment and the fact that many of these offenders are paroled after serving only one-third of their sentence has generated controversy and angered victims of impaired driving." In other words, variable sentencing is the focus, while rehabilitation and restitution are not.

I totally understand why he did it, every father who loves his children will. The justice he sought in court would have sustained him for a while, but after that, even if he tried to move on, re-marry, even have more kids etc, none of that could assauge the loss. I can't even imagine losing one child, losing three in one moment.... nope.

I hate everything about this case. The ridiculously short sentence and the aftermath of the family. All Canadians who have a heart should not be okay with this sentencing. There is something fundamentally wrong with the Canadian Justice system if this is what you call Justice. Either the justice system has meaning or none at all. And when it can be bought - then it has none at all.

What kind of justice is that... One can kill another and be in jail for 10-20 years and can be free... Such a shame...he killed three innocent and he's still alive...why don't sentence him to death.

Murderer got out last year, accident occurred in 2015, so served 6 years, for killing 4 people.. Laws need to change. He was a rich guy who flew back from bachelor party, got in his vehicle and drove home from airport, he had money, he could have gotten a car service. Someone should have taken care of him in prison, thought they didn’t like dudes that hurt kids, he killed 3 kids plus their grandfather, he had money so again probably paid his way out of that too. The whole of Canada should be embarrassed. No mandatory minimum for drunk driving causing death? If there is it needs to be raised so loosers like this have to serve more than 1.5 years for each life he took. Disgusting.

10 years..? Our country is such a joke. Why are accountability and individual responsibility cast aside so we can get a false sense of empathy and compassion. I'm embarrassed to be Canadian with how we let people like this, rapists, murders etc off with joke sentences. It doesnt make us morally virtuous to hand out these sentences. If you dont want people to drink and drive you might not wanna give a guy 10 years for killing 3 children and an adult. Canada is such an embarrassment with the disingenuous wokeness and lack of accountability for horrible offences.

10 years?! That's it?! For killing 3 children? It's so easy to not drink and drive, so incredibly easy. Sleep in your vehicle, sleep on the floor of whatever place, sleep on the ground, get a taxi, call someone. It's just a sure fire marker of a selfish POS. Drunk or not, I have always had the awareness to know not to drive drunk. 3 children, and he should be charged with the death of the father as well.

Depends on where you live now because look at what people in towns like San Francisco are getting away with ... they knew they could steal roughly $900 worth of merchandise in the stores and not getting any trouble and so guess what now a bunch of drugstores like CVS are gone and there's areas and a number of people really relied on those stores ... but they closed down from wolf packs of people coming and stealing all at once in large numbers you can look for the videos of it .

And because of those crazy thieves more and more items were put behind the locked glass and it was harder for honest people just to shop and buy things because they couldn't always get the clerk to help them . Meanwhile the thieves were just grabbing everything they could and then just going out the door because the guards were not supposed to touch them and the police also knew not to go after them .... it's hard to believe but it happened
