Amber alerts terrify me, especially if they're directly in my city. It means that there is a child out there, maybe even close by, that could be alive or dead. I get super sad when I get one of these alerts.

Same here. It’s terrible to think that the children are most likely in danger. Or have gone missing. They terrify me because of how loud they are especially when you have it next to you while you’re sleeping and you wake to a loud alert.

You bolt awake, and check your phone. You're pretty sure that with a noise this dissonant, it's got to be an air strike, or a natural disaster. It's an AMBER Alert. Last seen 1 hour ago. In a city 12 hours away. You're unable to help, and now you wish the alerts were geo-targeted.

My phone was constantly ringing and a window on my phone opened, which I could not close. I somehow managed to suppress the notification. Now I have 8 massages with a description of a car and the location, followed with an "AMBER Alert". I really thought I catched a virus, lol.

This is a very good idea, however the sound (while probably trying to get attention) is more distracting than anything. If it had a big pop-up, you would still see it when you wake up (rather than being awakened by it) and it would still be there when you try to unlock your phone (instead of screeching and distracting you while driving, working, etc) Just remove the sound and it would probably be less intrusive for people

Fun fact: The U.S. Amber Alert sound has two notes playing at the same time, one of them being closest to an Ab at 853.6 hz, and the other one being out of tune, but closest to a Bb, at 960 hz. combine the two frequencies, and boom. amber alert sound.

I'm all for saving children, but a majority of the time these are for petty custody disputes 3 counties over. The abuse and overuse of this system is making it ineffective. I do not need to be woken up at 2 am for a custody dispute 3 hours away. I do not need to be woken up at 2 am for an Amber Alert regardless (I am sleeping, what use will I be?)

The thing is, the chances of someone staying in the area during an abduction are slim at times. So for all we know, they could’ve driven nearby if they’re just a few hours away. A day or two away though, that’s a different story
