Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek warned residents Wednesday that water usage following a catastrophic feeder main break is creeping up from a low of 440-million litres on Saturday, adding “that’s not great.”
“While we are staying under the threshold that is critical to ensure that we have enough water for all of us, this gradual increase is increasingly becoming a concern,” she said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Gondek emphasized the need to conserve water as repair work continues the feeder line, which has forced Calgarians across the city to cut down drastically on their water usage.
"You and I, and all the people and the pets and the plants that we love so much, need water to survive. It is absolutely our source of life. And that's worth the sacrifice that all of you are making,” she said.
A boil water advisory in the neighbourhood of Bowness was lifted Monday, but water restrictions remain in place, with Calgarians across the city being told top stop using water outdoors and to do their best to minimize outdoor water use.
City officials have described the broken feeder main as a "critical water transmission line" and note the damage has "severely impacted" Calgary's water supply, as well as the ability to move water across the city.

Just heard an ad on the radio in Vancouver. Pleasant female voice. "you may have heard BC is expecting a drought this year". Urging us to conserve water already. The solution is obviously to bring in hundreds of thousands of new people every year.

I’ve worked in engineering for 35 years. The best boss I’ve work for was at the biggest engineering company in town that started with F (you guess)(he lead all the billion dollar jobs 25 years ago when a billion was with a big B). He said “if you can’t estimate project timing it means you don’t know how to get from start to finish and that means you don’t know what you’re doing”. He was tough but as I grow up I knew he was fair, he was never mean. I left that company but I always remembered the things he taught me and he gave me my work ethic going forward. As this schedule increases in days (on a simple project like this) I reflect on the days I worked with my primary influencer. Bottom line is these leaders would be sent out the revolving door into the private sector within their three months probation period.

@@JEdwarrd So why are we spending money on pride sidewalks, bike lanes nobody uses, speed bumps on streets and traffic calming measures to make it more difficult to move around? I am an engineer in construction and the City is ridiculously behind on proper mainteance.

If u are comparing paint on a side walk to massive feeder lines buried underground, I call your bluff about being an engineer, or being a good engineer. U are comparing apples to oranges. Water usage is creeping up... imagine that. People eventually need to do laundry and use some amount of water. What do school systems in their final weeks have to do with water usage? Do kids go through more water at school than at home? Mayor Gondek's hair looks awfully clean and styled for such an emergency - just saying.

Very incompetent comment. If that feeder main was the ONLY feeder for the entire city, the ENTIRE city would have NO WATER whatsoever. There are redundancy feeders in place. However you take 60% of something away guess what happens? 🙄 Also, do you have even the slightest idea how much it would cost to twin a 12' high presscon watermain? (Which is what that is). Approximately $1m/100m pop out your wallet my guy, pay for it!

Thanks for another lecture about how the municipality made a catastrophic mistake and the mayor keeps blaming the tax paying citizens of the city. The part that was left out was a solution. 1 pipe of water for 1.3M people.........

Hey we did a water pipe in 1975 with a population of 430,000 and no Airdrie, Strathmore, Okotoks or Chestermere. So with a metro population of 1.6 million -NO IMPROVEMENT. City Management / whole world is not what it once was. I worked on roads and LRT age 19. Could never do what was done then. Spend all day doing red tape junk.

That's a strange take on this. If everyone had that attitude you'd pay your taxes and have NO water. Taxes are a community thing, they provide community services. Sometimes things just kinda happen. I pay my insurance every year too and I've had to wait MONTHS for my insurance company to deal with a claim when there was a large event in my area. Sometimes things are just unavoidable and reasonable people can sit back and say "well, that sucks but the people working on the issue are trying their best".
