Venezuela and Guyana have agreed to a high-level meeting next week, over the status of a dispute between the two South American nations.
At the centre of the dispute is a 160,000 square-kilometre swathe of land where massive discoveries of offshore oil and gas have been made.
Venezuela has placed troops at the border, while the U.S. held joint flyover drills with Guyana. Mike Drolet on what has happened and what might be next.

This is serious stuff - Let's see how fast countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, get involved in this annexation of Guyana. I think he's counting on Russia, North Korea, Iran and others to support this move. Next thing ya know he want to annex Trinidad and Tobago too!

Dude who you lying too, what cities in development, you can barely call Georgetown a city must less for essequibo, Guyanese literally call essequibo the bush, the place barely have roads must less proper infrastructure. 90% of guyana resources come from the essequibo yet guyana has done nothing to develop it. Unregulated gold industry that doesn't benefit the country on a whole, its basically the wild wild west there with Chinese and locals. Land , logging rights, water rights sold to the Chinese with no real benefit to the Guyanese population must less the 200000 indigenous people living in the essequibo. Oil and gas rights sold to the Americans instead of following the middle east example and building your own centralized government oil company so the Guyanese population can actually benefit from the oil instead of get crumbs

you do know that Venezuela is only in this state of poverty because of EU and American sanctions, stopping countries and companies from doing business with it. Seizing it's foreign reserves in banks in Europe and America and England seizing it's sizeable gold reserves in London. Venezuela always had problems but things was never that bad til America called for sanctions Guyana on the other hand with a population of less than a million more resources and land than any caricom member yet the average Guyanese live in adject poverty. And mark my words even with all that oil nothing is going to change the population get crumbs. The government will build big useless , unnecessary infrastructure projects take the majority of the money through backdoor deals and the population will have nothing to show for that oil money in 10 years. Even if the government is get 2% deal on the oil that's enough to give a population of less than a million a world class free health system with enough hospital, free world class accredited complete education system. That's looking out for your population. Guyana was positioned to be as rich as the UAE and Qatar get expertise from Trinidad, the mid east and Venezuela and build a national centralized oil company and keep all or atleast 50% of the profits for Guyana but the politicians only think for themselves and not for the population or worst yet for the people of the essequibo. I don't agree with the way Venezuela is about this situation but what have guyana done for the essequibo the government and most of the population treat it like a separate country and only want it because of its resources but do nothing for the population living there

@@MileeSimmon-db8ub I agree Venezuela is terribly run, but Venezuela is going to take Guyana unless Brazil or America send 100,000+ ground troops to stop Venezuela's 300,000 soladiers (this video didn't count reservists), and Guyana's 4,000 soldiers and 3,000 reservists are not enough. Guyana basically has no army. It has ZERO air defense systems. ZERO tanks. ZERO defenses. It only has 24 mortars, I remember a few decades back when my SCHOOL ROTC had more mortars than the entire Guyanese army. Literally a bunch of ROTC students with a bigger arsenal than Guyana. Guyana isn't serious to stop Venezuela because they haven't announced conscription yet, Guyana needs to conscript 300,000 troops TODAY and start training them and beg America for guns. Otherwise, there is no stopping Venezuela. Venezuela could land 10,000 troops with a mixture of naval landings and paratroopers, and overwhelm Guyana in just a few hours before any American intervention can even reach there. But even if America parks a carrier battlegroup off of Guyana's coast, that would just mean Venezuela would have to go by land and river boats: there are some rivers nearly the entire length of Essequibo that lead almost straight to Georgetown in a few hours. Is Guyana building fortifications to prevent this? No. Guyana has been relying on America being world police and that strategy is now backfiring. Guyana should have had all males 18-60 conscripted years ago and given them training. But Guyana is scared of it's own people (separatist movements a few decades back) that it won't give them guns and train them and instead saves by not spending anything on military and instead spends it on welfare and corruption. Venezuela is worse to be sure, but militarily Guyana doesn't have a chance unless America is willing to send 200,000 troops to go die in the Guyanese jungle (NOT LIKELY especially if America is too busy with Ukraine, Israel, and doesn't want to leave Taiwan exposed). Their only other hopes is for Brazil to send it's ENTIRE army of 214,000 troops (and that might not be enough if Maduro isn't bluffing about his 3.7 million "militia" forces, but even if he only has 1 million militia that's a problem), or for Brazil to declare war and mobilize it's entire reserves. I doubt Lula, a socialist president of Brazil, will do such a thing... Maybe a joint Brazil-American force with each contributing 100,000 troops (200,000 total) is the only possible outcome to save Guyana, but even that is farfetched and requires both countries to be willing to die in Guyanese jungles over a conflict they have no stake in. America can't really afford to spare even 100,000 troops right now, we'd have to take them away from Romania (and they are there to deter a Russian invasion of Moldova) or take troops away from the Pacific (there to deter an invasion of Taiwan). America has failed to hit their army recruitment numbers so America only has about 180,000 offensive troop capability right now which might not be enough to hold off 400,000 Venezuelans (and certainly not 1.4 million if Maduro has even just 1 million of his supposed 3.7 million militia). And I doubt America is going to announce a draft to defend Guyana especially when Guyana hasn't drafted it's 300,000 military age males first.

Why was an agreement made? Nicolau (let's translate the name), former bus driver who became president thanks to the late Chaves (remember "why don't you shut up Chaves?") achieved what he REALLY WANTED, which is to make international headlines to APPEAR to the Venezuelan people as THE GUY and being re-elected - THAT WAS HIS ONLY OBJECTIVE AND IT WAS ACHIEVED. The objective of the President of Guyana is to maintain its reserves and its gains from its natural resources and it has been achieved. Brazil's objective is to broker the agreement and prevent the start of a war and Brazilian involvement and avoid a possible escalation of the civil war in Brazil as there is a sharp political division in Brazil between Lula and Bolsonaristas and, with the agreement, Brazil remains leader in South America and Lula reinforces his re-election. The USA's objective was to demonstrate military strength, but also to call Brazil to its role in America by brokering peace and minimizing military efforts and maintaining its interests in Guyana's reserves. In other words, the objectives of the presidents involved were met in an agreement and the fight without slaps ended with everyone managing to strengthen themselves in their countries. This reminds me of fights between neighbors, the kind where the police and everything like that, but in the end everyone goes to their homes after an agreement, they have parties, they eat a lot at a barbecue and they drink until they fall asleep.... It's a good thing that we are Latin Americans and we never get together. we fool... ("I'm Latin American and I never fool myself, I never fool myself" as the song said)

Venezuela is interested in developing business interests in the south-west part of Guyana. If furnace ready coal is found under that 'bulge', it would start a development to that general area. Brazil will be foolish to not want in on that, she controls more natural ground than Venezuela and Guyana do combined. What the Colonial powers have going on would not be impacted at all by what if happening across 500km of 'jungle'. Gold is worth more in a CPU chip plant than when it is locked away in some vault or some underdeveloped ground. Modern automated mines means the locals collect their payment, without ever having to 'leave home'. Modern basics, smart phones and on-line shopping are standard, some of that income is converted to household products, so the 21st century comes to them. Factories/mines would be where big gen sets would be found. Modern coal furnaces are almost pollution free, and coal can be shipped long distances by trains. Currently, the lower 2/3 of Western Guyana is underdeveloped and a handful of existing roads connect the two regions. If there are only a few locals there, then those locals will be able to shop a lot. The 'State' would still collect royalties, that would have remained 'lost revenue', Colonial powers like to restrict access to 'precious metals' as much as possible. The River that would act as a 'natural border' between nations would become a national border. Under control of BRICS for the next 50 years should see the waterway become busy and 'healthier' at the same time. The inland industrial centers refine and export natural resources that are in demand by 'paying customers' in foreign lands. Some of that returns as finished products, that are too complex to be able to be produced locally. Merchants make 5% profits at 15% 'markup over costs'. Consumer demand drops prices from 'luxury item' to 'wholesale item'. International ports should have 'duty-free stores' as well as 'damaged or abandoned' containers', (with shipping label intact) so contents are known. Before the people on the banks of the river can attend 'auctions', they need an income that is 'state sponsored'. Broadband vids in the 'dead of night' is not something that would be 'difficult' o' 'expensive' in this day and age. Surplus military bridge pontoons might be just what 'the house-boat' market is looking for.

Given the situation with other current land grab attempts..........its going to be a disaster and we all know it. The moment Maduro invades other nations are going to react for their interests. The only real winners are going to be the elites

Much the same as they did in Venezula, and brilliant results yeah. Currently 76.6% live in extreme poverty, population is declining due to mass emigration and the health system has collapsed. open your eyes! An oil rich nation with a GDP of 372.9 billion dollars in 2012 now has a GDP of around 45 billion. He and Chavez destroyed their country and left the people in misery.

Maybe you don't understand the term not a blade of Grass. No one in Guyana, particularly the majority of our native American population wants Venezuela setting up mining operations anywhere near here. Maybe you should cast a vote to see who wants to leave your country taking large swaths of it with them.

How is he being violent? Enough of this semantics. There will be no violence as long as Maduro keeps his gherkin in his trousers. If he decides to pull it out he will find out the hard way. A guerilla war against Venezuelan aggressors will require very few dedicated troops and resources. Maduro should focus on more pressing issues like providing adequate food and basic social necessities for the people of Venezuela instead of stuffing his cronies guts with more stolen wealth.

The Guyanese helicopter that crashed was on a mission to remove the Venezuelan flag raised by indigenous people in Essequibo, there would be no point in shouting at them STOP, they don't understand any English!

That territory is Venezuela's, the UK stole it in the mid 1800s, it as a long history of dispute and Venezuela has been always peaceful, please read and investigate more, check out the UN files, the last agreement was in 1966 signed by the UK and Venezuela in 1966, when Guyana was not even an independent country. Guyana has not respected that 1966 agreement and on the other hand Venezuela even helping them with cheap oil before all the discoveries. This is not about Maduro or Ali, this is a legal stuff.
