The federal government's new proposed firearm legislation, which includes a complete freeze on handgun sales and purchases across Canada, is already drawing swift reaction, and questions about how the measure will take shape.
Bill C-21 stops short of an outright ban on handguns, and instead, would set a hard limit on the number of weapons in the country.
Abigail Bimman reports on how gun owners feel targeted, who's advocating for the proposed bill's tighter controls, and why experts are divided over its potential impact on this country's rising gun violence.

Statistically speaking, Canadian gun owners who are fully licensed, and who buy their guns legally don't commit gun related crimes. It's the people who get their guns illegally who are commiting these crimes. So... how is banning the legal sale of guns gonna solve anything? This is stupid. He's punishing the people who aren't even apart of the problem, without fixing the supposed problem.

You are right. The problem is now, and always was illegally obtained firearms. Unlicensed, irresponsible criminals and crazy people already don’t follow the existing laws (ie Nova Scotia shooting). The laws that were already on the books back then didn’t stop him, what makes anyone think that making more laws targeting the law abiding is going to prevent this? What Trudeau has now done is temporarily spiked the demand for handguns as those with RPALs scramble to get what they want now while they still can. Beyond that, it is in reality a time-released gun confiscation. For those who don’t know, a restricted firearm in Canada is registered to the individual RPAL holder. He or she will no longer be able to sell/buy/transfer their handgun to anyone. Once they pass away or their RPAL is no longer valid, the handgun is either surrendered to the police, destroyed or rendered inert. We are one generation away from the end of civilian ownership of handguns in Canada. I would love to be able to bequeath my range toys to younger family members when my time comes, but now I can’t.

The majority of guns used by criminals in Canada can be traced back to the United States, if the government really wants to reduce gun violence in Canada then they should expand the CBSA and integrate X-Ray scanners into every major border crossing. We only need to defend the border crossings near roads and railways, the unforgiving wilderness will handle the rest.

All while your prime minister toppled important natural rights like dominos on an almost weekly basis. The protester should have tried speaking to the premier of Ontario, (Ottawa is in Ontario) but when the protesters refused to comply with legal orders to disperse it was a done deal. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 1979, you introduced screening and safety courses. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • By 1994, you required a photo and two references to apply for a Firearms Acquisition Certificate, imposed a mandatory 28 day waiting period, made safety courses mandatory, expanded the background check and screening, reclassified certain firearms, introduced regulations for storage, transportation, and use, and prohibited standard capacity magazines. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 1995, you introduced licensing to have and buy firearms, and to buy ammunition. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 1996, you required us to get your Authorization to Transport certain firearms, and authorizations to carry certain firearms in very limited conditions. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 1997, you regulated shooting clubs, shooting ranges, and gun shows. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2001, licensing became mandatory. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2003, you required all firearms to be registered. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2015, you introduced firearms prohibitions for those convicted of domestic violence. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2019, you passed C-71, which would pave the way for circumventing parliament, and to ignore the experts' analyses (law enforcement, firearms functional experts, community groups, etc.)which you claimed to base policies on, in any further restrictions. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2020, you prohibited some 1500 models of firearms for absolutely no reason than political pandering and cowardice in addressing escalating violent crime. We complied. There was no discernible reduction in violent crime. • In 2021, you reduced judicial consequences for those illegally using their illegally acquired and already prohibited firearms. It didn't affect us, as it didn't apply to us, and violent crime rates continued to climb at an alarming rate. • In 2022, you banned the sale, purchase, and transfer of handguns. We complied. Violent crime rates continued to climb. • Also in 2022, you proposed this latest piece of absolutely useless, enormously costly, and completely counter-productive measure of prohibiting even hunting rifles and shotguns, even though the statistical significance of them or their owners being involved in violent crime registered at the extreme right of the decimal place. And yet violent crime continues to escalate. So, what compromises or concessions are we willing to make at this point in what has been over a hundred years of faulty logic, intentionally deceptive public messaging, malicious and misdirected prosecution, and bad faith negotiations, while completely ignoring the contributing factors and root causes of those most at risk of violent behavioural trajectories, AND increasing your leniency for those who actually commit horrifically violent crimes? Ok don't take this as legal advice I'm merely a pleb. Read the current and previous laws before even thinking of attempting this. The assault weapons buyback price list was recently published and one of the things on the list was Firearms with a 20mm or greater bore diameter with a buyback price of $2,684. I'm sure you could make a black powder cannon for 100 dollars :) I believe but not sure a cannon was grouped with antique firearms and required no licence. I may be wrong but if I am right it would be the ultimate troll of the firearms buy back program. Not sure if the banned firearms that were previously non restricted had to be registered after they became prohibited. I had nothing that was named in the ban. If it had to be registered at the time of the ban this wouldn't work.

The reason for that is California has way more gangs, Motorcycle Clubs, drug traffickers than that of Canada. Canada's problem isn't the law abiding gun owners nor the already strict heavy regulated gun laws that Canada already has in place for owning and using firearms but it's lax boarder control for gun and drug smugglers, gangs, Motorcycle Clubs, and the black market that's the problem that no government in Canada has yet to tackle.

How do you get to hell? Very simple: claim that you're innocent. How do you get to heaven? Very simple: Admit that you're not Innocent, you're guilty and ask for mercy. How to know if you're guilty or not? Simply: Compare your life to the Ten Commandments God gave you in the Bible. Everyone agrees that if people followed the ten commandments there would be no need for governments or police. Do not lie. Do not steal. Do not commit adultery. Do not insult God by using his name as a cuss word. There are six more but let's just leave it at that. How many lies have you told in your life? Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you? Jesus said, if you look at a women lustfully you've already committed adultery in your heart with that woman. How many times a day do you do that? Do you use God's name as a cuss word? Would you do that with your own mother's name? If you answer these questions honestly you know that you're guilty. God can justly punish you and send you to hell. Ask him for mercy. His name is Jesus. It's as simple as this, The Ten Commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke God's laws. Jesus paid the fine. The fine is death. Ezekiel 18:20 - "The soul who sins shall die. That's why Jesus had to die on the cross for our sins. This is why God is able to give us Mercy. Option A. You die for your own sins. Option B. Ask for mercy and accept that Jesus died on the cross for you.

You guys should look up the woman who stopped a mass shooting in West Virginia with her handgun. I'll post a link to the article in another comment and in case it gets deleted, I'll post the article here: Police say a woman's actions may have prevented a mass casualty event following an altercation about a man speeding through a neighborhood. "She did the right thing. I don't know if any other person would have done that," said Lt. Tony Hazelett with the Charleston Police Department. Charleston police said it all started when 37-year-old Dennis Butler was speeding up and down a parking lot inside the Vista View apartments. He was approached by people attending a graduation party and a birthday party, who asked him to slow down, as children were playing. Witnesses said Butler seemed agitated and left but returned to the complex shortly after, armed with an AR-15 style rifle, and started shooting at the crowd. Police said a woman pulled out her pistol, shooting and killing him. "This lady was carrying a lawful firearm," Hazelett said. "A law abiding citizen who stopped the threat of probably 20 or 30 people getting killed. She engaged the threat and stopped it. She didn't run from the threat, she engaged it. Preventing a mass casualty event here in Charleston." Police said Butler has an extensive criminal history. In 2016, he was accused of shooting and pistol whipping a 19-year-old woman, but those charges were dismissed because no witnesses testified at a pretrial hearing. Court records showed Butler had been convicted of two felonies in the past, so he should have not had a gun. Speaking about the woman, Hazelett said, "She's just a member of the community who was carrying her firearm lawfully, and instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night."

@@oldpossum57 How about the people in the U.S. who've used firearms in their homes to defend themselves against home invasions? Even here in Canada they have been used. The average firearm owning person trains at whatever level they want to train at. Some don't even train at all. Some own firearms for recreation, hunting and self defense, which in the case of the woman I pointed out above, perhaps she either did spend the money to train for self defense, perhaps she was just a target shooter or perhaps she never trained. I don't know. What I do know is that she legally owned a handgun and had the licensing needed to carry it on her person. The point: Firearms are the only thing that levels the playing field when someone with ill intent uses firearms of their own, whether legally or illegally obtained. There are courses available to the public to train with their firearms for personal protection. As for the school shooting incident, I don't know all the circumstances around it and don't see why it has anything to do with Canada's banning of handguns. However the point about a woman stopping someone with an AR, who used a handgun of her own is relative to the video.

This is largely the manifestation of an overall anti gun sentiment that the Liberals believe is prevalent in Canadian society and they are taking advantage of that perception to appear to be doing something about gang violence and mass murder. Any one with an IQ over 10 doesn't really believe this foolishness will actually achieve anything constructive but this won't stop them from continuing with this destructive legislation. And the anti gun extremist groups they are teamed with couldn't care less about legal ownership because of their misguided and simplistic belief this will actually reduce gun violence. What WILL happen however are some of the unforeseen affects of this poorly thought out approach. Grey market and black markets will flourish over time as people refuse to have their handguns stolen upon their death and will transfer them to other licensed gun owners who at this point of frustration will choose to skirt the law. The result will be loss of control over these guns many of which may find their way into the black market. Foolish politicians forget what happened with Prohibition in the US !! The buyback program itself will likely have the same success rate as in New Zealand where only about 17 percent of people have turned in their firearms, the rest going underground. On the plus side, including hunting and sport shooting firearms in the mix will likely rile up a large constituency of gun owners who previously weren't involved and they will become more political in the future. Of course this could be a calculated move based on the principle of "two steps forward, one back" to retreat on the contenious issues to get the phoney "assault weapon ban" and handgun ban passed. Politics can be a devious and deceptive business and after years of practice this government has become a master at it !!
