Would it surprise you to know drinking water in some Canadian cities contains unsafe levels of lead?
A year-long investigation by more than 120 journalists from nine universities and 10 media organizations found some disturbing answers.
Hundreds of thousands of Canadians could be consuming tap water laced with high levels of lead leaching from aging infrastructure and plumbing, a large collection of newly-released data and documents reveals.

I was thinking same.. I know we have a water crisis in many towns and reserves. Toronto water is safe, with possible exception in older building. You should let the water run a bit as a practice before drinking in general.. Pipes do get old and you probably don't want sediments (metals /plastics /coating) , bugs, in the first little bit of water.

Seeing all this, I'm blessed to be born in India. Here the water from rivers is just filtered and UV sterilised. The pipe line is made of Galvanised Iron and brass. These pipes were laid as early as 1950s. Modern day pipe line still use G.I. and brass. The water's taste is sweet and doesn't taste like chemicals or metals. The only problem here is we don't save water as good as the westerners. We'll eventually do it.

Disastrous tap water filled with nasty chemicals indeed. Bottled water that is in a container that is made of poison (chemicals in plastic are carcinogens) and the temperature increasing and decreasing ruin bottle water even before people buy it. You can blame this directly on corporations. Economy deception. Using key words and the important things people need to push corrupted mentality along the deceptive words aimed to plant fears into people so they buy into the tricks, instead of accept or pursue more positive answers. Meanwhile the free wild water rivers and oceans are exploited and chemicals dumped harming the planet and ironically everyone as time passes. If you think digging a hole on the same boat you are on to spite the people on the other part of it is intellectual, everyone with this mentality is part of the corruption and destruction problem, and worse, they are stupid and in denial to it.

I own a house in a rural area of PEI. I had the water tested by provincial government multiple times in the 90's and was told it was safe.. I was only 21 when I purchased the home and didn't question what they had told me. I raised 5 children in that home and didn't find out until years later that we had been drinking and bathing in water with manganese and other heavy metals 100x higher then guidelines of Canada but was told it was safe.. All my children and myself have serious health issues and after doing a lot of research have discovered that the fish processing plant down the road had dug several deep water wells that contaminated my well and others in the community. I've made hundreds of calls to several gov members and have been repeatedly ignored. I have copies of all water tests that prove how unsafe this water is and the comments at the bottom of each page saying there is no health concerns and I can't even find a lawyer to help me even after getting blood tests to prove that my manganese levels were 3x higher then normal 10yrs after moving from that home!!

I'm pretty sure the greed of bottling factories is less compliant or par with the cities. Further this adds more plastics to your daily water source. I haven't heard of many people with lead poisoning in Canada. However I have heard a lot of Alzheimer's especially in Ontario. So maybe we should be more concerned about aluminum. Bretta filters were tested and have high traces of aluminum most people are also too cheap to change their filter frequently and will eventually get the build up of toxins anyways. Lots of lazy plumbers still use brass fittings, copper pipe and lead solder. We have new brass fittings in our home and they all say contain traces above California's lead limit(on the packaging because of California's strict regulations).

I live in Winnipeg, and recently had the city's side of lead service pipe replaced while they were doing water main upgrade project. The city's records wrongly identified my service pipe as copper, as it was actually lead installed in late 1940's. Replacing private side of lead service pipe (approx 40') was estimated at approx. $4,000. I decided NOT to replace the lead private side of water service as I did not have the funds, lead pipe appeared in very good condition, City of Winnipeg treats water with orthophosphate, contractor advised there was not much cost savings to replace the pipe at the same time the city replaced their side of the lead water sevice. Questions: How effective are the orthophosphates in our water, do they completely block lead from leaching into the water? We have lead filter on our drinking water, but will we be exposed unexceptable levels of lead from unfiltered water when showering or cooking? So many potential sources of contamination i.e. lead/legionella/radon/VOC's/mold/asbestos/formaldehyde, etc... Where is it reasonable to draw the line?

Each water source is unique and requires different processes/chemicals to accomplish adequate disinfection to meet existing high provincial standards. That makes some delivered water more acidic than others, which can be a bad combo with an old distribution system. Cities in Ontario are working towards it (I work for one) but federal regulation would be superfluous! An aid package directed directly at distribution system upgrades would be great however.

Those who think digging a hole on the same boat you are on to spite the people on the other part of it is intellectual, everyone with this mentality is part of the corruption and destruction problem, and worse, they are stupid and in denial to it. Mercury causes calcification of organs including the brain, and it is added to the water along fluoride. Because the sewer pipes seem more important to those running these corporations than the wellbeing of people. Osmosis machines are worth the investment and far more planet friendly as well as budget friendly than bottled water.
