As rental prices continue to rise, tenants and advocates are calling on the premiers to take action and help renters.
From rent control to rental registries, advocates say premiers need to work together instead of focusing on provincial divides and create national standards for renters.
Sean Previl takes a look at what renters and advocates are asking for.

Sorry Jeffro but I think it's already too late. Even if the leaders agreed to a 2% per year increase, 2% on a rent that is already $1,400 for a one-bedroom here in my building won't help much. We need to bring rents back down to where they were a few years ago when people and artists and low-income workers could still afford to eat & live. Will any politician tell landlords they must start charging $500 less per month? Not likely. If the government sends people monthly rental assistance, the landlords will suck it out in six months with higher prices. The biggest problem is when one moves out of a low-rent agreement, the landlord can up the rent to market rates. Those now living in basement suites will probably be hit with mega increases in the next 12 months as higher mortgage interest rates for the homeowner will be sure to have them add a few extra zeros on that beautiful oasis known as their basement. What's the solution? REVOLUTION, or so I've heard. ✌

It's not just rental market .. the government have inefficient and highly protected staff that end up not working as efficiently as future hires COULD be. If the property valuation won't come down .. so property tax won't go down .. landlords can't make money without lowering rent possibly ... Say they don't drop rent, at the very LEAST LET US MAKE MORE MONEY. With high taxes and a salary cap because of the way our system is set up .. we have insane amount of immigrants moving here with money but none are investing because IT'S NOT WORTH IT. So they just make money elsewhere and spend here cause they like the living conditions/safety more. Also .. if we can't pay our people or have an economy that can .. they will leave. A lot of our top talents have left, even doctors and nurses move south of the border to make 2-3x more in a dollar worth 30% more. Drop the inefficiency, drop the taxes and stop giving money into projects/people that have absolutely no returns. At least create projects that can make the inefficient people worth the investment.

You buy a property with the intent to rent it at a fair price according to what you paid for it, interest rate, property tax, home insurance, renters insurance, and have a bit left over for unforseen expenses like broken appliances and general maintenance. Now what do you think happens to the operating cost when the rates go up 4 percent? That's right, your rent money doesnt cover the cost of the place your renting... Greed you say? Yes but its not the owners fault. It's the government and city officials you voted for that has driven up the cost of everything.

Cities voted for a progressive and liberal government causing interest rates and cost of living go up, who else is there to blame when they keep voting the same way.

Canada's provinces already have some of the strongest tenant protection laws in the world. These strong legislations unfavourable to the landlords have directly contributed to a reduction in new rental properties, and this is what's leading to the high cost of rent. If renters want to bring their rents under control, they should lobby to make conditions more favourable for landlords to put more housing supply into the market so renters can have more housing choices and lower prices.

Precisely. I wouldn't rent right now. Risk is too high with people defaulting on rent, damaging the property. All of the laws protect the renter. No interest in renting.

@@canadiansfor2A that would help, but they can't pay off the debt because they spent too much money so they need more people coming into address the tax debt. Liberal government is a disaster wherever they go. All they do is drive a country into bankruptcy.

This is where every landlord neglects to think properly... the rules are not favorable to the tenant!! They're written for the province as they don't wNt to shelter non payment tenants!!! They make landlord pocket the billions of losses every year so they don't have to!!! Similar to the Wynn situation and public electric companies, sell them off so the people pay more later on!!! They make money and we pay more!!! If you've been to the tribunal hearings, 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of cases are non payment of rent and you still have delays on thus process why? To keep these scumbags in as long as possible, otherwise, they'd be on the streets!!!!
