South Africa deploys army as protests erupt over jailing of former president Zuma

South Africa has deployed soldiers to quell violence that erupted in the wake of former president Jacob Zuma's jailing, the military said on Monday, after days of protests and looting left at least six people dead.
Disturbances worsened as Zuma challenged his 15-month prison term in the country's top court after weekend unrest by pro-Zuma protesters in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng, where the country's largest city Johannesburg is located.
Police said 219 arrests had been made, as looting and setting buildings ablaze spread over Zuma's incarceration.
Any confrontation with soldiers risks fuelling claims by Zuma and his supporters that they are victims of a politically-motivated crackdown by his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced late last month for defying a constitutional court order to give evidence at an inquiry investigating high-level corruption during his nine years in office until 2018.
The decision to jail him resulted from legal proceedings seen as a test of post-apartheid South Africa's ability to enforce the rule of law, including against powerful politicians.

We will suffer in the coming weeks, stores have been looted and burned down, plenty of our people have lost their jobs and incomes. Businesses have been destroyed badly. The violence started on Thursday and Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday and we expected him to sent the army to protect businesses and he decided to wait too long. He could have avoided this before it gets worse.

I saw this coming ages ago. This has nothing to do with Zuma but everything to do with poverty, unemployment and hopelessness. The looters have nothing to lose because they have nothing. People with nothing to lose or hope for are dangerous. They feel let down and marginalized by the very ruling party that they fought for and alongside. The government needs to work night and day to upskill people and create employment. I love this country and hope we can move very swiftly past these unfortunate events to something better.

As a South African, I can confirm that this has been going on here for almost a week but the situation here is worst than what the international and local media outlets are portraying. * Theres stores that we have been shopping at since we were kids that have been closed down permanently.🙈 * The police are overwhelmed 😟 … and in certain areas there are bodies just laying in the streets. 🙈😟
