Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Joe Biden, and South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo were among the world leaders paying their condolences to former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated Friday as he was giving a campaign speech in Nara, Japan.
Trudeau said he knew Abe as a "compassionate, strong leader who understood the importance of service, understood the importance of building a better world." He also called the incident "horrifically disturbing."
Biden said Japan was a "very, very stable ally," and that he would stop to sign the condolence book at the Japanese embassy in Washington, D.C. later on Friday.
Abe was shot and killed while campaigning for a parliamentary election. Police arrested a 41-year-old man shortly after and said the weapon was a homemade gun.

It was such a shock when it happened. Here in Japan, the mood seemed so grim and muted , on a Friday no less. He was a great leader, and though his policies did not always sit well with many, most got a sense he truly cared for the well being of Japan and it’s people, not to mention Japan’s friends like Taiwan. He took over a political landscape that saw 5 different leaders come and go in a 6 year span, and went on to become Japans longest serving PM. RIP Prime Minister Abe, and thank you for your service.

@@letsgetit7566 If the death was under different circumstances, I would agree with this sentiment. Abe was assassinated during a campaign. I would think shock and disbelief would have been a 'normal' reaction - especially from a fellow politician. It had happened just the day before not the week to have time to absorb the reality. Trudeau has no self awareness and the longer he is in the public eye, the more obvious it becomes.

It’s great to see everyone comes together and mourn the death of Abe. I know many people, especially those on the Left, despised Abe during his tenure as PM of Japan (including myself, who absolutely hated his reluctance to acknowledge Japanese atrocities during WW2) but we can all agree he didn’t deserve to be assassinated. I’m not gonna pretend I liked the guy but again, he didn’t deserve this.

And maybe it’s better most people don’t know much about him because they’d be more reluctant to show sympathy. I hate being the guy who’s “talking trash” about someone who was assassinated less than 24 hours ago but I think it’s important we know exactly who he was. I’m just hoping when people learn about his beliefs and political policies they can still be sympathetic and acknowledge he didn’t deserve this.

Your comment is so ignorant and barbaric. Japan is a civilized country with law and order. Nobody deserves to be murdered for “annoying the public”. No politician can satisfy each and every citizen. There will always be those who will disapprove. The civilized way to deal with your disapproval is to go out and vote. We can’t all run around murdering people because we disapprove their beliefs or their actions. The shooter already confessed that he murdered him because he believed Abe was part of an evil secret cult. He was clearly mentally disturbed.
