Scaled-down Marineland reopens in Ontario without rides and animals

Marineland, a popular attraction in Niagara Falls, has reopened its doors after a troubled off-season. The park, which faced allegations of animal cruelty and the death of beluga whales, has scaled back its operations, closing some rides and animal exhibits as part of a redevelopment plan.
The attraction was found guilty in March under Ontario’s animal welfare legislation for failing to comply with an order related to the care of three young black bears.
"I think they are on their last legs, but there should be an end to this," Michèle Hamers from World Animal Protection Canada said.
Global's Sean O'Shea reports.

I felt the same way about the Toronto Zoo. I was kind of dragged along unwillingly. I was not very happy. I couldn't even fake it for the kids. At one point I had to go back to the car and have a quiet breakdown. Some of the exhibits were nice. They had a large, but indoor, area for the monkeys.

What's the point of opening at all? Are they that desperate for what little they'll get in admission costs? The remaining animals should be put under protective custody by a government agency, and said agency should work at finding new habitats for these animals, which Marineland should pay for. Just my opinion.

None of the whales, dolphins etc. can be returned to the wild. They wouldn't be able to survive. So it becomes a matter for caring for them better while they remain in captivity for the rest of their natural lives and not brining in additional animals.

Let me just start by stating that I went to Marineland when I was a kid and have very fond memories of the visits. Including a school trip while I was in elementary school. I appreciated that attitudes towards such parks and attractions have changed. And we can definitely know better about the conditions for the animals and the relative educational value for the visitors. Years ago when my much younger cousins were little I went to the park with them and my aunt and uncle. The rides were really the draw for my cousins at that time. There were rides that they wanted to take. It's possible that the dolphin and whale shows were already eliminated by that point. I think we might have stopped to see the Beluga and some bears for a moment, but it was really a rides and junk food day. It is the easiest theme park to get to from Hamilton. The parking is really easy. Despite some of the comments posted here I don't think it is a woke thing. Successive governments have imposed restrictions on the owners of the park due to public demand. Popular public demand. Not some vocal minority opinion. Regulators and inspectors independent of partisan affiliation have fined the park. More animals have died than they have stated publicly. And they have buried the remains on their lands in violation of provincial laws. Pretty much none of the whales can be returned to the wild. They have been domesticated. It is a costly and lengthy process to return them to something close to the wild. The only example of a Free Willy moment didn't work out very well. So there are only two questions really remaining. 1) How do you better care for the animals currently in the care of the park owners until their natural deaths? 2) How do you reclaim and redevelop the land being used later? (Keeping in mind that there are a bunch of buried whales, dolphins, bears etc. buried on the grounds.

Humans eat meat. It's not really possible to live very well without meat even with many supplements. Lab grown meat is starting to show promise. Cows are not at all natural. You can't return them to the wild. The oxen that the cow comes from no longer exists in nature. Domesticated cows and chickens cannot survive in the wild without the assistance of people. You could build animal sanctuaries for all of the chickens and cows currently being raised for human consumption, but once they die off the species will be extinct. Pigs appear to be the only domesticated animal used for food that could thrive if returned to the wild. Chickens can't even procreate on their own.

The point being made by those who understand the subject well is that the animals have a very poor quality of life and die much younger in captivity than they do in the wild. We are making their lives miserable and shortening their life expectancy. For years it was argued that it was valuable research and education. Those familiar with the subject say amusement parks like this haven't yielded much valuable research or taught the public much about these species. There have been facilities that do research and outreach work, but they don't teach the animals to do tricks! They provided more appropriate habitats. And when possible they rehabilitate the animals and return them to something closer to their natural habitat.
