I lived in Peru during the 90's and protests for government corruption turned into a magnet for impoverished criminals and they eventually just turned into riots looking for opportunities. I think it's important to point out that there is meaningful purpose with the protestors and that now there's people going there just to incite violence

The irony of that statement is impressive. The Hong Kong protesters were far more violent and destructive than the Portland ones have been. Gluing bricks to the roads to stop traffic for weeks? By contrast people over seas see protests and rioting in the US as natural considering how much oppression minorities here have experienced and the lack of action to change it but we see the protesters as selfish kids who are snowflakes apparently. It's like expecting blacks in South Africa not to riot.
