Poilievre “doesn’t even understand” how capital gains tax changes work, Freeland says

The Liberals and Conservatives once again clashed on the capital gains inclusion tax rate during question period on Wednesday, a day after the House of Commons approved the previously introduced changes and are set to go into effect on June 25. “Will she amend her bill to say that no one who is in the bottom 99.87 per cent of income earners will pay any new tax increase?” Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre asked.
“First, the Leader of the official Opposition doesn't even understand how the capital gains inclusion rate works - That's a problem. Second, the Leader of the official Opposition disavows his own words in this House about capital gains,” Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland replied.
After government house leader Steven MacKinnon stepped in to claim that the Conservative leader has been “skulking around” for the past 20 years without “much contact with the outside world,” Poilievre responded by quipping that “I see they’ve pulled the finance minister off the ice.”
Poilievre also mockingly asked the Liberals if they were “okay over there” and said that they were “a little wacko,” before correcting himself and saying that he “won’t call them wacko” because it was “unparliamentary.” Previously, Poilievre was historically ejected from the House of Commons after calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his drug policies “wacko.”

Um he either doesn't understand or he is being intentionally misleading in this video. The increase proposed does not take effect until you earn more then $500,000 in capital gains in a single year. That is already in the bill, that is also more then 99.87% of Canadians earn. Unless he is demanding that they include language to increase it based on inflation in which case he really needs to explain it better.

@@FakeSchrodingersCat 500,000 comes up pretty quick if you were to inherit a deceased parents home or try to sell an investment property that you’ve owned for 5+ years. Plus this will indirectly hurt the poorest Canadians as the increased tax burden on commercial properties will result in higher rents. Unfortunately “taxing the rich” is incredibly difficult.

Even the owner of a corner store who makes on average 60K can earn, in one year, $500K in capital gains when they sell their business. You want to steal their retirement from them? Disgusting.

@@TheGruntski First capital gains can be deferred for a number of years to spread out large one time sales. But ignoring that. Lets look at what your hypothetical even means. In your hypothetical the person would pay income tax on their 60k of earning plus 260k in converted capital gains for a total of 320K in taxable income, when they earned 560k that year. And again they can defer part of those capital gains until the next year.

But she is right in this case. He either does not understand how capital gains tax works in Canada or he is intentionally misunderstanding in order for you to develop misinformed opinions. He is demanding a guarantee that 99% of Canadians will not make more then $500,000 in capital gains a year, that is just silly. But really why do you care, do you have a large investment portfolio or are you working for a wage? Because if you get a wage this will not effect you, your taxes next year will be the go down. Because the Liberals cut income tax. Meaning that even if you make your money from capital gains as long as you don't reach that threshold (of again $500,000) you will be paying less tax then last year. Are you actually mad because Millionaires have to pay slightly more? Or were you just told to be mad about this and didn't actually understand what was going on?

It is quite underhanded for the Liberals to exploit the large aging population in Canada, who will be selling their properties and cashing out their RRSPs, facing higher capital gains taxes when moving into care homes now and in the coming years. From a business standpoint, the increased capital gains tax will push businesses to move to the US. Fortunately, we won't have to endure this for much longer. (And the threshold is $250K not $500K - this is aimed at the elderly, not the rich)

The public is ignorant. A man directly affected by this shouldn't be allowed to vote on it. It's a conflict. Pierre owns several investment properties that he doesn't want to pay higher tax on when he sells. (You know he'll sell before he crashes the real estate market).

@@charleyrobertson4663 This year is not an issue, nor are the next few, But this will impact myself and many others when the time comes to divest of properties and other investments that we worked our tails off to develop. This may create the need to find other avenues to wind down businesses, be creative with moving properties around, etc. Maybe reigning in spending and being more responsible with our tax dollars is a better option. If anyone thinks that the average investor isn't going to feel this over the next few years as real estate prices, etc. continue to grow may be in for a surprise.

@@penlam The Profit from the sale of investments or property. If you buy a property for 1000$ then sell it for 2000$ your capital gain is 1000$. Now at 50% (current rate) that means you have 500$ in tax leaving you with 1500$ from your sale. This new law will not even touch you unless said gains (profit, not total sale price) exceeds a quarter million dollars per year. So say you buy a property at 200k, then sell it 20 years later for 400k, doubling your money you still don't meet the threshold for the new tax increase. How's that?

What about all the corporations supplying what's left of the jobs? When they trigger capital gains on sales of assets over 250K, they will be paying 16 percent more. That's not affecting just 1 percent of Canadians. That's all big business. The trend in big business when they have increased business expenses, is to reduce labour expenses by cutting jobs. She's either lying or she's unable to understand the impact of her decisions on society because it impacts a significant amount of Canadians.

In doing so, a person's entire nest egg gets taxed as if it were all collected in a single year, so generally it will be taxed at a much higher rate as it passes through the estate than it would be if it were used while alive over a period of many years.

The title of this video is unbelievable. What is wrong with Global News. Apparently they don't understand how capital gains tax works. We are not in the 0.13 percent of earners in this country but if my husband were to sell his business, his retirement fund, under this government, it would cost him a whopping significant amount of extra taxes. The only thing that my husband invested in was hard work, good fiscal policies (the liberals could take a lesson from him), 10 - 12 hard working people that worked for him and were well paid for and well taken care of. Now he will be penalized for doing all the right things for Canada and Canadians in the name of fairness. This Liberal government has no idea what they are doing or who they are hurting. His business expenses between Canadian pension plans, WSIB, drug and medical insurance plans for his staff, new furnaces when theirs breaks down in the middle of the winter when they don't have the cash to pay for an emergency replacement, company vehicles to drive etc., etc. This government constantly claims they won't take lessons from the Liberals, WELL THEY ABSOLUTELY SHOULD!!

I did the math....I picked a worker who makes 117,333 a year working at his job. I used that number because it is the top of the second income bracket, making isolating capital gains taxes easier and quicker. If that worker has NO capital gains he will pay 19,833 in federal tax or 17.7% of his income If he declares 340k of capital gain AFTER the inclusion rate increase he will pay an extra 53,607 in federal tax.....that 53,607 is 15.8% of his capital gain. If anticipating his capital gain he decides to take a year off work he will pay 39,062 in fed tax. That 39,062 is 11% of his 340k capital gain. People who are against the capital gain inclusion rate increase from 50% to 66% for amounts over 250k should suggest what a "fair" tax on capital gains should be. It is already lower that the tax levied on employment income....so I ask: How much lower should the government target the capital gains tax rate to be??? 10%, 5%....NO tax at all ???
