Montreal officials see red after century-old home turned into colourful billboard

A duplex on Atateken street in Montreal stands out from the pack with its dramatic colour combinations of highlighter green, rosé pink and mustard yellow.
The bright colours painted on the century-old home are from an adverting campaign that is turning heads - and earning the condemnation of city officials.
The home, now looking like a lifesize doll house, is getting a lot of attention and that is the point. The property has been temporarily transformed into a billboard for Koodo mobile, a subsidiary of telecommunications firm Telus.
While prompting smiles by passersby, the project is not getting any love from city officials, who have denounced the commercial act.
Global's Brayden Jagger Haines reports.

There IS valid reasoning behind not painting brick though. It's intended to be a porous surface that absorbs wicks and evaporates moisture. Painting it stops that process and can ultimately lead to bricks becoming brittle and crumbling. It's what's caused partial building collapses in the US somewhat recently. It's not really the colours that's the issue, it's painting brick. I agree though, we absolutely should be allowed to have more colourful spaces and buildings that aren't brick and can be painted fun colours.

Once you paint brick it ruins it. The entire point of brick is that it is low maintenance. Once painted you can never get all the paint off and you will be stuck painting it continually. IMHO they should have just covered it with vinyl not paint that they could have removed.

Bylaws have always existed??? Painting brick is genuinely a bad thing because it stop it from wicking moisture which is intentionally used in building design and can lead to bricks getting brittle and breaking. Apparently nobody in these comments is aware that you SHOULD NOT PAINT BRICKS! They are meant to wick moisture and that is factored into the building designs. When you paint them, they stop wicking moisture as the paint acts like a barrier, and over time they dry out and get brittle and break. This has recently caused buildings in parts of the US to have partial collapses. It is a genuinely bad thing to do from a safety perspective. Plus not to mention as a home owner, I'm sure you wouldn't want you walls collapsing a few years later simply because you painted them, right? These bricks are already really old and would be more brittle than newer bricks, therefore the rick would be increased big time. It's a bad idea - plus house advertisements are tacky AF.

The colours are fun and the campaign was totally expecting and counting on the publicity from the press. I don't like the fact that the colours were part of an advertising campaign, but if it was the homeOWNERS, the city should have no right to stop their palette choice. This is culture in the living, so who's to say the colours that were chosen a hundred years ago are a better choice then the colours chosen now? There's a reason why the century old house looks like the way it does, someone made a choice. Can't living people make a choice about their property now? Must we be hostages to the choices people long dead had made? 🤔

Forgot to add that bricks should've probably been let out of the painting, or they've should've used a breathable wash. Bricks are designed like terracota planters, they're meant to be breathable. I'm used to the colors of Nature, which can be very garish at times, but is enjoyable to see nonetheless. A few colorful murals on a couple of city buildings doesn't even begin to be attractive enough to interest me to go into a city. Cities should, themselves, be colorful and vibrant.

Tapos yung urban environment magiging katulad sa Maynila with the big billboards sa EDSA, yung mga eletrical wires nagiging spider webs sa taas ng kalsada, yung mga deteriorating state ng mga buildings, etc. ? No thanks. Having regulations is not being a Karen, it's putting order to chaos, especially when it comes to the governance of a big city.
