Questions are swirling about the future of Canada’s federal Liberal party and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after the party's surprising by-election loss in their longtime stronghold riding of Toronto-St. Paul's.
The Liberals had held that federal electoral district since 1993, when former prime minister Jean Chrétien first came into power.
Global’s Mackenzie Gray reports on the public sentiments of support for Trudeau and what polls are saying voters' thoughts on potential successors to him.

Trudeau staying with the Liberals is the greatest thing to happen to the conservative party
@va3svd
@va3svd 2 күн бұрын
It seems that it isn’t, shockingly. While he has become widely loathed, his cabinet is so full of low-functioning people that they really only have worse alternatives. Remember his gender-parity cabinet “because it’s 2015”? Turns out they were generally unserious, thoughtless, people. Several ministries are in open or semi-open revolt against their own Ministers (Foreign Affairs and Finance, most notably). The Conservatives generally aren’t well-liked by default by Canadians because of both reasonable and unreasonable biases, but Canadians will still “break glass in case of emergency” and panic-turn the government over to them. This is usually done only in case of crisis; only Harper inherited a country from the Liberals that wasn’t in full-on crisis post-WW1. Then things improve, and then Canadians go back to being Canadian and hand it back over to the people who promise to do all the things that create the crises. Then a few years later after all the new regulations and tax increases are implemented they’re scratching their heads wondering where all the good jobs went, and why they can’t afford dinner. Long story short, Sir Wilfrid Laurier thought that the 20th century would be “Canada’s Century”. Canada absolutely squandered it, despite having some really good governance for a few years (Laurier, Chrétien-Martin, Harper). We just had utterly irresponsible government for way too many of those years (Bennett, Mackenzie King, St-Laurent, Trudeau, Fidel Jr.).

@@va3svd GREAT commentary. Only thing I might add, is although you're right that Harper inherited a country not in crisis, BUT, I would argue it was a bit of a break glass - due to the sponsorship scandel. And the fact the Libs were tired and been in way too long. Regardless, even with how well Harper handled the 2008 recession, it still wasn't good enough to keep him in, so you're 110% correct when you said "and then Canadians go back to being Canadian and hand it back over to the people who promise to do all the things that create the crises" Boggles the mind.

Im surprised to hear mention of Glace Bay. I’m from Glace Bay. Born and raised. Left and moved back, buying a house on the street I grew up on. It’s a good time here. Houses here are $100k-300k and you can pretty easily get 1+ acres of land as a yard (far below national average prices). Our workforce is a bit behind but could be a lot worse with median household income around the $55-60k mark (2.2 people average household size). Drugs and addictions, sure wave that flag. Police and healthcare workers will say there are a lot of cases in Glace Bay but that’s a small issue compared to the mess we’re in nationally with housing and cost of living.

If you listen to each one of them, they all say the same thing. Make no mistake, they were given their parrot sheets. Say what is on it or else. Besides, they all know they will be out of a job come next fall. Pretending to stand by trudeau simply gives them more time to do nothing while getting paid the big bucks. More time to siphon and funnel taxpayer money into their own businesses. They all can't be that damn stupid that they think trudeau is doing a good job can they? But then again....

Even though it was a narrow loss for the Liberals in that riding, a loss is still a loss (especially in a riding which had been a stronghold for them over the past 31 years).

Absolutely Trudeau should stay on as PM. Canadians should be reminded, daily, of what they voted for.

Good...he is exactly the guy we want running as leader of Liberals. He is the easiest most incompetent person to be running against Poilievre.

Thing is, if his party would just give him the boot, a new candidate would absolutely smash Poilievre. But that won't happen. They're too proud of their poster boy, and it's costing them real progress and momentum.

@@ToxicKetchup363what exactly are you basing that on junior? Pierre is quite popular and there’s not even one MP on the liberal side that comes even close. I haven’t seen even one reputable pollster that agrees with what you say in fact they are universally saying it doesn’t matter who the liberals put in at this point Pierre is going to win so any leader they put in this cycle would be a sacrificial lamb

@@ToxicKetchup363 you are wrong my friend. They have been in power for nine years and have severely damaged Canada People can’t afford to eat, pay rent or buy homes. This is proof that this government is incompetent and anyone voting for the last nine years is a fool.

One thing I am sick and tired of him saying is "I speak for all Canadians" obviously not since quite a fair few people are voicing against him and his bullturd policies and programs that are ruining this country on levels not seen ever. But he speaks for us all...
