In her book, The Inner Voice, Ms. Fleming talked about why people often turn to classically trained singers in times of grief. She said it was for 2 reasons. First, "the tradition of music grounds and connects us through a universal appreciation that transcends taste". She has clearly demonstrated that here in a tender rendition of "Oh Danny Boy". Her second reason for why people turn to trained singers is "a trained voice has a kind of innate authority that transits strength. The sounds...emenate from the...whole heart and soul". This requires no explanation, as that strength and emotion reverberates through her performance to the entire audience. With this performance, Ms. Fleming pays tribute to a man who served his country and defended it in crisis, as well as giving a nod to his roots. Rest in Peace, Mr. McCain. Thank you for your service.

Well stated and so very true. That song, in particular, has such a soulful melody and only those made of stone cannot relate in one way or another. Renee Fleming has a beautiful voice that can go from opera to theatre and honors us all, in this case the McCain family, with her gifts.

Crying is natural and healthy. Let us have the acceptance, empathy, & compassion for mercy to yourself and all beings as we freely express our normal emotions through tears. Whenever U hear the ding, "Danny Boy", I am so moved emotionally that I surely cry. It is healthy to allow our tears. Bless you and all whom mourn & grieve for all how pain and losses in all beings' lives. Peace and liberation to all sentient beings, everywhere.

This memorial was gloriously inspired, and was filled with stellar highlights. But this moment broke me, her rendition was sublime. I'm surprised people there were holding it together so well, I weeped throughout the entire ceremony. I hate funerals, don't go to them, and certainly don't watch them televised. But I could NOT stop watching this one. It was divine. #ripjohnmccain.

50 years ago, my father was laid to rest with a funeral service that included this same song. My father was a hero of the Second World War. The lyrics are powerfully written with equally powerful music. Renée Fleming not only sang it flawlessly, but as an almost private tribute for one of her most devoted fans: Senator John McCain. This is evidenced by the mourning faces of his family.

Renee Fleming has always been an idol of mine. As a singer, her work has influenced me the most not just because of the beauty of her voice but because of her soul and her ability to bring out the true emotion in everything she performs. Music takes on a new dimension with her - let us not forget that she was chosen to sing a gut wrenching “Amazing Grace” at Ground Zero in the months after the attack. What a beautiful tribute to an incredible man.

What a moving part of the service and a nod to John McCain's Irish heritage. The song is about a man having to leave home to fight in a war and not knowing if the person he loves will still be alive if he would return home after the war. It was written by an English person, It is an old Irish tune, though and it is connected more to Irish culture than England. I always have deep emotions and cry whenever I hear this song. Perhaps, it is partly due to my Irish heritage & bring highly sensitive in my temperament.

Truly one of the most beautiful Irish confluences of music and poetry...'Danny Boy' is played and sang the World over...now belonging to a blending of all cultures and people! It's each of our own individual experiences and stories by themselves...that surround and embrace our souls within this music. A love letter of sorts...unconditional, unrelenting, and overflowing with love! All of which makes for something words cannot describe! Thank you Global News for this upload: We see and feel the painful sorrow and tears of Mrs. McCain; we feel and hear the intensity and expressions of an impassioned performance by Renee Fleming; and we see and hear a deeply riveting and poignant string quartet by "The Diderot Quartet", with "Accordionist, Guy Klucevsek"! yelorsirhc because whether you believe it or not, many people actually, literally Hate me because I’m gay, because I’m black and because I don’t share their political views, and they tend to lump me and what they perceive to be “my kind” into a category that says we’re all alike, and can’t possibly have minds and singular thoughts, so whenever I see something I identify with that seems outside of who they perceive me to be, ie I mourned the death of a man who was a staunch Republican and who had a sketchy and altering view of people like me...I feel the need to remind people that the ability to appreciate the value of a good person has no attachment to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or political views or any of those other things silly people use to hate and/or discriminative others for. If you walked in my shoes you would know why, but you haven’t so I get why you might be tempted to innocently ask a question with such a seeming obvious answer... IF innocence was your actual purpose and you asked me this question to elicit an intelligent response, now you know why I don’t just say good job like the rest of you.

Kevin Boles Anyone who who has the ill affected mindset to use a silly word like “libtard” isn’t worthy of the time it would take me to finish reading their nonsense. And, I’m smart enough to know that goes the same for a person who uses derogatory remarks about Republicans, you and your kind are the real problem. All people should be respected.

Thank you for allowing us to witness John’s service. His request for Renee Fleming to sing Danny Boy was emotionally stirring. The song is about love and loss but also remembrance..It’s story is our story, a universal lament that has personal resonance for all of us. It’s mystical content allows the individual to interpret the experience and make it their own.The communication between two people Connected in life and now separated at journeys end, creates an invisible yet tangible force only understood by those involved in the Intensity of the experience. The words are achingly beautiful, the pathos palpable. In many ways, it represents a summary of john’s life in song. R.I.P.
