Joe Flaherty, beloved "SCTV" star, dead at 82

Comedian Joe Flaherty, a founding member of the Canadian sketch series SCTV, has died at the age of 82.
His daughter confirmed to the Canadian Press he died Monday following a brief illness.
Flaherty first made his mark on the comedy scene while at SCTV, playing characters like Count Floyd, news anchor Floyd Robertson and the iconic character of SCTV station manager, Guy Caballero. A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., Flaherty served in the United States Air Force for several years before making the pivot to acting. He moved to Chicago and joined the Second City Theatre troupe.

Joe was a legend. All his characters on SCTV were great. Floyd Robertson, Doctor Psychedelic, etc. You could tell in his interviews his SCTV days in Toronto working with all the other greats on that show were some of his happiest memories. RIP

It's funny how he was open on how he based "Count Floyd" of "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre" on, yet not so forthcoming on whom he modeled the man behind that vampire suit (and werewolf howl), anchor Floyd Robertson, after (being as Flaherty grew up in Pittsburgh, I've long suspected it'd have to be that city's dean of TV news anchors, Bill Burns).

@@wmbrown6 Well I do know that long time Canadian journalist and news anchor Lloyd Robertson started on CTV the same year that SCTV started over on GLOBAL (1976).

@@bobwoods1302 - And Earl Cameron (on whose name Eugene Levy's Earl Camembert was a play) retired in 1976 (again, the same year as "SCTV's" launch on Global) after a 32-year career with CBC, including seven (1959-66) as anchor of what would become "The National."

I always liked Joe Flaherty and I always liked SCTV, It was a funny show and in many ways it was better than Saturday Night Live. Rest in Peace, Joe Flaherty, you were one of the best comics. You are missed!

RIP Joe . I am sad today . Every thing he did was funny! He could just stand there and be funny. Every little small appearance in a film would add to the movie greatly. Another star in heaven.

Sammy Maudlin, Guy Cabellero and Count Floyd were his most well known, but I laughed just as much at Alki Stereopolis, Norman Gorman, Buzz Mahovlich, Vishnu Mckenzie and the rest of his lesser known characters
