Deb Surine’s life will likely end right where it started. She thought she was given a second chance, but there was something else in store for her.
After a lifelong battle with addictions, the Calgary woman was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite dealing with the prospect of death after finally being able to enjoy a life free of addictions, she's not bitter.
As Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports, she has put off a decision to alleviate her pain with a medically assisted death.

taking responsibility for your actions past present and future is paramount in these situations.. too many people these days blame others when it was not others that put the bottle in your hand,we all have choices in life no one else makes them for you!!..I SPEAK FROM DECADES OF EXPERIENCE .

Jordan Peterson's wife, Tammy, has an interesting story on KZfaq of how a strict carnivore diet helped her, and others, recover from cancer against all odds. Amazing what happens when cancer has no sugar to feed on. Good luck with your choices, Deb; hope the best for you and your family!

I agree with her. Where was the support when she had her battles with addiction? It's like ppl do not view mental health issues the same as like terminal cancer & that isn't right.

Addiction is a person choice, cancer is genetic.

Once person's cancer story is no better than the next, they all suck. But why are alcoholics and drug addicts seen in the light as some poor victim? Where's the responsibility and accountability for their poor choices? They all have this boo-hoo for me story, but we never hear about people in similar circumstances who chose NOT to become addicts.

Because some people are functioning addicts/alcoholics & others are crippled by it. It's not weakness or laziness. It's addiction . It doesn't need sympathy , just understanding.

Where's the responsibility and accountability for their poor choices? It says she suffered childhood abuse, maybe constantly raped or beaten by a family member, who knows what happened before she left home at 15. Children retain these traumatic experiences the rest of their lives and yes, turn to alcohol or drugs for solace.

People need to understand that metal health issues, esp childhood trauma, causes addiction. These are people that did not get the proper help and supports they needed, which is sorely lacking in our break down of society...and booze, drugs, food, etc is easily at hand as the fix. Genetics, parenting, lack of support systems, etc play into the mix. I very much understand this woman's pov wishing to end her struggle and I am so glad she is happy with the animals and found peace there.
