“Humiliation Day”: Chinese-Canadians mark 100 years since Exclusion Act

Canada Day is sometimes reflected upon in a different manner by many Chinese-Canadians and Chinese immigrants, often being called “Humiliation Day.”
The exclusion act, a controversial law implemented in 1923, halted Chinese immigration to Canada for decades.
Marking 100 years since it became law, a museum in Vancouver has opened to educate the often-overlooked legislation and celebrate Chinese-Canadians. Mike Drolet reports.

Hear yet another parable: There was a man, a householder, who planted a vineyard, and encircled it with a fence, and built a winepress in it, and built a tower, and leased it to husbandmen, and was absent from it. if away. And when the time of fruit arrived, he sent his servants to the husbandmen to receive their fruit. And the husbandmen, seizing the servants, smote one, killed another, and stoned another. Then he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. And lastly he sent his son unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. But the husbandmen, seeing the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance. And taking hold of him, they dragged him out of the vineyard and killed him. So when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?

What do mostly people do nowadays about this cruelty? Nothing n all forgotten! Sad! And China will be the punching bag for decades to come... Guilt, Guilt, Guilt and more Guilt. This is the idealogue's prescription for National Pride. Any observant person understands that when they dwell on their shortcomings, they become smaller and effectively destroy themselves. Learn from the past, make changes, and be proud of the changes you have made. However, do not linger in shame. If you do, ask yourself who is controllling you... and what are they trying to accomplish?

How much longer do we have to live in the past? My family immigrated here, on both sides, my dad’s father fled Russia, during the bolshevik revolution, fight for Canada in the First World War, received massive problem, won’t injuries on his arm as in a result of that conflict. During the Second World War, my father lost his old is brother in France at age 20. My father served in the Korean War. On my mother side, they fled Ireland in the late 1940s. They were bullied and picked on every day. Those were different times, things have changed . We choose not to live in the past, but we learn from them instead. I’m done with all these victim cards, I’m sorry what happened to the Chinese, but I was a long time ago . What we can do this we can talk about recent Chinese immigration and some of the issues such as tens of billions of dollars being laundered through our casinos. Secret police stations. Major part of the opioid problem, counterfeiting, sex, trafficking, need to go on?

I don't believe it is necessary for governments to apologize for the wrongdoings in the past; though it is a very well-meaning gesture. I agree and believe it is the responsibility of the media to report so people will be reminded from time to time what we have done wrong and learn from it. The issue here is not how other governments or countries, including China, treated the Chinese; it is how we Canadian at that time, who regarded ourselves as superior to other races, treated the Chinese workers. It is human nature to want to find better places for themselves and their children. The flow of immigration is always from worse to better places. Therefore, it is absolutely wrong to think that it is okay to treat newcomers poorly based on what they used to be treated in their home countries.
