It’s not a “diss”. It’s a valid criticism that many parts of downtown Vancouver are effed. This over-defensive mindset of many Canadians is why we cannot get solutions to real problems.

No one on Earth would walk through the east side and not say it's rough. To pretend it's not is stupid.

We need regulation

“Crime down nearly 9%”, it’s not about crime dummy, it’s about this addiction and drug crisis in my city of Vancouver, east-van. Which, the city is not effectively dealing with (the issue). Crime lowers, but addiction rises - not all addicts do crime, and usually it’s very small. I work in the DTES in support of folks living in the community. Where do the drugs come from? Who lets the drugs enter the city? Why is creating affordable housing such a problem? Why isn’t the City of Van not listening to the grassroots orgs in the DTES supporting folks here? Addiction is just going to get worse unless there is real dialogue and real commitment to reduce addiction, and helping people wanting out of addiction - no one chooses to be an addict and live on the streets of DTES.

It’s been gradual so not everyone notices day to day but many of Canadas cities have slipped really badly. I recently came back to Toronto after living there in the 90s. Completely different place.

There is nothing romantic or compassionate about drug addicts and crime. This should be a wake up call. Canada's reputation is falling, and no one seems to care! The only thing ppl are worried about is pacifying feelings and filling their pockets. Vancouver is awful.

This is a neighbourhood in Vancouver that nobody drives to, and in fairness most of the rest of Canada put their homeless people on one-way bus trips to Vancouver so because we have the mildest winters and the mildest weather for the most part, we got all the homeless people. This is a neighbourhood most Vancouver rights never see.

I guess that "dropping a diss" now means "using your eyes and stating facts." The homelessness, drug and crime problems are terrible in Vancouver, of course, but they have been spreading throughout the entire country for years, especially since 2022. Downtown Ottawa is a warzone in certain areas (Rideau Street and other parts of the Byward Market), and I don't recognize the place where I grew up anymore.

I agree! Vancouver is a mess & it used to be so nice! I wouldn’t go there now! Drugs are a problem everywhere now, but good cities have been giving treatment to the addicts who often become homeless! It’s very dangerous to society!

People have high expectations for canada especially compared to the USA. Also when staying in the downtown of any major city you will often see the best and the worst a city has to offer. I’m also sure he doesn’t visit skid row much while in LA, because like most people who are from cities they know which areas to avoid. This doesn’t take away from what he said, I do agree with him very much dtes is very rough and has only gotten worse.

Some of these people are veterans, some are people put on highly addictive meds by doctors and the government. They are people and many of them meant well at some point in their lives. It sucks. It's scary that I wouldn't have far to fall to end up homeless, get assaulted, start taking drugs to cope....next it's all I can do to not get sick😞

There is an expectation that Canada doesn’t have these issues. Unfortunately, almost major city in the world is experiencing higher crime, higher homelessness. California is full of encampments up and down the state on the side of the freeways, on beaches, city streets. We’re not that bad yet, but if something isn’t done, we will get to that point
