Greece introduces 6-day work week, labour experts worried it “can spread”

Greece has become the first European country to introduce 48-hours of labour per week. As of July 1st, some Greeks have the option to work six days a week or add an extra two hours onto their workday.
The country's prime minister says the measure is “deeply growth-oriented,” but some labour and political analysts are strongly against the move.
“I haven't heard anyone who's happy about it because the expectation - as you said it's an introduction - can spread to other industries. So, there is the concern that this is not going to stop here,” says Sakis Gekas, a modern Greek history professor at York University.
Global’s Amandalina Letterio reports.

Minimum wage in GR is 780 euros. If you have a degree you get around 1200-1500 euros. Rents in big cities are well above 300 euros. People suffer. After the 15th of each month, the majority do not have any more money for the rest of the month. Prices have skyrocketed the last two years. The members of the Parliament get much more than 10.000 euros per month. Now you can compare.

Greece's unemployment is huge. There are people to work, only if they can afford the option, they will choose to remain unemployed and hunt for a job that pays well instead of slaving for pennies.This measure is in favour of the employers, they get more work out of their employees and in return they give them peanuts. And since i am Greek and have lived and worked all my life in Greece, let me inform you that you cannot say no to your employer, the next moment you are fired. And yes the unemployment rate is so high, that you will be replaced on the spot. The employer that complains about not being able to find an employee, does not offer enough payment.

So now the Greek people will, in theory, spend more time producing goods and providing services. Unfortunately, they will have less time to consume them and less time for entrepreneurship. The solution proposed is to increase input in an economy. This is completely backwards because GDP is a measure of OUTPUT. The number of hours worked is hardly relevant, what matters is how much is produced per hour.
@StrikeBolteafc
@StrikeBolteafc 4 сағат бұрын
People actually get less productive the more they work. If someone works 6 days a week the extra day they will be so drained they will barely be doing anything, while only one day rest means when they come back they won’t feel properly energised causing even worse productivity. That’s why 4 day workweeks have managed to keep roughly the same amount of productivity as a 5 day workweek but 8 less hours working because the workers are more relaxed and less stressed, causing more work to be done, and a 5 day workweek is still an improvement to a 6 day workweek, this could actually cause productivity to drop. And a another even worse problem is all of the youth Greek workers will leave to join literally any other eu country that doesn’t have 6 day workweeks, causing even less workers while having to sustain more pensioners which they will not be able to afford. It’s not going to end well for Greece if they stick with this strategy for to long
