Four people have died, including a baby and their grandparents, after a major crash caused by a high-speed police chase through oncoming traffic on HIghway 401 east of Toronto. As Mike Drolet reports, the tragedy is raising questions about how police pursuits should be balanced against public safety.
History was made in the House of Commons after Speaker Greg Fergus expelled Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for refusing to withdraw a statement calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a "wacko." David Akin looks at how the Tories are doubling down instead of backing down, how that remark compares to other tense moments in previous Parliaments and whether Fergus can restore order to the House.

Here's a hypothetical: in another world where the police called off their chase calling it "too dangerous too pursue" and the robber continued to recklessly attempt their escape travelling the wrong way down the 401 and proceeded to again crash into another vehicle taking multiple lives and their own. Would there not be another opposing party criticizing the police who called off the chase of being overly cautious and allowing a crazed driver to put the lives of countless innocent people at risk?

The police should have called off the chase when the suspect went against the traffic!! They have how many helicopters and could have easily followed the suspects that way! The helicopter doesn't fly or is available 24/7. A helicopter can't physically stop a car going the wrong way. Do you all think that the driver would have safely maneuvered around those on coming cars and avoid each one of them? Even at 5km/hr, a car hitting it at 120km/hr wound be fatal.... If the police didn't do anything, we wound all say "where were the cops?!"

to those who think the police were just doing their job -Police set an example for how to respond within the law - may this tragedy be learned from and not repeated -the police escalated the situation and there were 3 deaths due to the criminals actions and the police decision to pursue endangering innocent people ,think about it-how many vehicles and occupants put at risk during this chase , even liquor store employees are instructed not to engage with theft for their own safety, there are safer ways to catch criminals- time for changes in the courts and change in police pursuit tactics

Did you watch the full debate? When you did, you saw/heard Pierre call Justin "a practicing racist for the first half of his life"..... Others have been kicked out for calling someone a racist, Why shouldn't Pierre? But he wasn't, he was allowed to continue. this was said right before Justin said anything about spineless leadership. Also note that Justin did NOT actually say Pierre was a spineless leader either. Although he is. When you're talking about house rules, whether you like it or not, there's a difference between saying a person is something and a person is demonstrating something. Justin never said Pierre was anything. He "played" within the rules while Pierre broke them. Add to that that the entire conservative party was yelling and disruptive every time someone talked..... The whole party and their leader needs to learn to respect the house and show that respect to the house. They can show respect to the house and still not have respect for their opponents.

Durham Police has a helicopter so that they can follow from a distance, and take up the chase again once it is not as dangerous. Question is, how far back was the police? If they were nearly out of sight then nothing anyone can do about how the driver of the van behaved....

The police should’ve abandoned a high-speed chase in such a manner. How else was it going to end? I can’t imagine what the family are going through. Somebody robbed a liquor store.

Absolutely the police should have halted ANY pursuit t on the highway, putting citizens at risk they way that cop did! Now a baby will never grow up & the family robbed of grandparents as well. I hear what people are saying about a dangerous chase. Criminals these days expect us to do nothing. At some point, we need to fight back. It is not the fault of the police. The criminals are definitely the ones at fault.

it is 100% the fault of the police , they should have stopped once the van got on 401 going wrong way ... they put every one on that highway at risk with stupid decisions... durham has a police chopper ... this tragedy is 100% on the corrupt durham police force . i hope the family sues and gets 100 million

risking peoples lives to chase some thieves isnt worth it. as someone who has been hit by a guy in a police chase i know first hand. imagine if it was ur kid and parents that got killed. if the cops don't chase, they'd still be alive.
