Speaking to reporters on Friday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz apologized to CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and his crew for their arrest at the hands of police in Minneapolis early Friday morning.
Officers gave no explanation as they escorted reporter Omar Jimenez away early Friday on live television. He had just shown a protester being arrested when about half a dozen police officers in gas masks surrounded him. More than an hour later, the crew was released.
“What gave me one bit of comfort was that it happened on live TV,” Jimenez told viewers after he was released. “You don’t have to doubt my story it’s not filtered in any way; you saw it with your own eyes.”

Reporters don't get arrested for covering news. Reporters all over the world, except for communist countries are always on the front line. They are their to document history. As early as 1850 during the Civil War they were there documenting stories. Reporters were there in 1890 covering the massacre of Wounded Knee in which 25 soldiers and 250 Indians were killed. Reporters are only arrested in countries in which the tyrant leaders don't want the info to surface.

Explain to me please as forgein what else should the Governor done? Yes he could perhaps fire or made someone to fire these officers, they will say it was an order from above and they above say no and no one else knows the truth and in the end it wouldnt even matter. I think the problem starts on two major points: 1. society - there is so much distrust between police and the people. 2. Police training - Here in Germany and also almost every other european country you have to study 3 years to become a police officer. In these 3 years police officer learn how to handle almost every situation the probably encounter.

@@Earthinet - As we all know from the Nuremberg trials, acting under orders is no excuse for breaking the law.
@xaldath4265
@xaldath4265 3 жыл бұрын
@@Earthinet Regardless of where you are from, when you break the law you are responsible for the repercussions of that. These officers broke the law when they arrested these people. If they were "just following orders", then the person who gave those orders needs to ALSO be held accountable. "I'm sorry" doesn't absolve you in any court of law I know of. SOMEONE is *legally* responsible for kidnapping this crew. I want to know who gave the order, what the order was, and what the *legal* justification was to take this action. Even if the officer(s) want to use the ol' following orders line, they need to appropriately question those orders and if those orders were to arrest, they NEED to have the mental fortitude to question "arrest them for what?" The governor is right. If civilians see the media being arrested, it gives the impression the police don't want to be held accountable for what they are doing...which we all know is true. The police have repeatedly asserted that they are above the law and the courts have repeatedly enforced their assertions. What should the governor have done? Held someone responsible...and if that means falling on the grenade and taking the criminal record for ordering officers to violate civil rights, then THAT'S what he needed to do. Again, "Sorry" doesn't work in ANY court of law I know of and when someone gets abducted...SOMEONE needs to be on trial.

And what if they accidentally got the wrong man I don’t know why he got arrested I haven’t looked into it yet but what if they accidentally picked up the wrong guy who had the same shirt color as him. if he did something illegal then yes he deserves to go to jail but after due process not being Murdered murdered.

I appreciate the apology, very respectable, but the crime was too big, too serious for a mere apology. I won't pretend to know what or how such should be punished, only that that apology, as beautiful as it was, that is not enough. I do know it should start with a full, unedited, unlost, release of the tape of the conversation(s) between the Officer(s) involved, and everyone on the other end of that conversation.

Omar asked why he was being arrested and they wouldn't answer. They just proceeded to cuff him even though he identified himself as a CNN reporter with his crew. He said they were standing there because they were told to move from where they were previously standing. He said tell us where to go and we'll go. They said nothing. Just led him away and then cuffed the producer and cameraman. The camera was put down and it continued taping until I guess police figured out it was on and turned it off. Yes something more than an apology needs to be done. A complaint should be made. I wish I could have heard that phone call.

Mr Governor - these kinds of police officers are NOT there to "serve and protect". It creates unrest in the community and makes people mistrust police and not reach out for help when they really need it. Also, can I just say, none of those police officers look they could have passed a physical test...why were they on the police force at all? Bc that is just not a good standard to set and maybe they are just not fit to be in that role.

The cops never told them why they were arrested. He identified himself as a CNN reporter with his crew and asked them where they wanted them to go stand to be out of the way and they said nothing except your under arrest. The governor didn't even say why they were arrested.

An apology isn’t enough. How about an explanation of HOW and WHY it happened? If there weren’t the systemic, structural problems that police and officials keep denying exist, it couldn’t have.

What are you doing to discipline/remediate/train the officers that arrested the reporters? An apology is great but the officers are inept for not communicating and then arresting the reporters all of a sudden. There needs to be action on this to ensure it won’t happen again and prevent this as to avoid distrust between the community and law enforcement, but also to show that we CAN trust our own police officers with our safety.
