After much controversy, years of delays, and being billions of dollars overbudget, oil is finally flowing through the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
It means more Canadian crude oil is now being shipped from Alberta to B.C.’s coast, nearly tripling its flow of oil and expanding access to lucrative global markets beyond the U.S.
But while the new pipeline may be pumping, Ottawa’s intention to divest raises questions about how long the infrastructure will be profitable as the world works to transition away from fossil fuels.
Heather Yourex-West explains what Canadians are getting from the investment and what might be in its future.

As soon as the Canada 🇨🇦 Trans Mountain pipepine is open, China 🇨🇳 will hurriedly apply to buy Canadian fossil oil and gas for sure. Thanks, China for - building more and more *coal-fired power plants,* and - burning more and more *fossil fuel.*

China is building renewables faster than any country on the planet. Yes, they’re still using coal as well, but their progress moving away from fossil fuels is admirable. They’re welcome to buy Canadian oil if they’d like, but we’re pretty far away, there probably isn’t much interest in our dirty bitumen.

It is the same as iron ore from Quebec when the iron ore producers were first starting up because of high prices in China for construction steel. A test shipment of iron ore pellets was sent from Sept-Iles port in Quebec to US steel companies on the great lakes. The price per ton the US companies paid was 35 US dollars. Then iron ore was then sent to China and it sold for 135 US dollars per ton. We need more than one customer for our products. I am glad the Canadian government made the TMX happen. Canadians should benefit from Canadian products.

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project has indeed faced significant cost overruns. Let’s delve into the details: Initial Estimates and Actual Costs: Initially, the project was estimated to cost around $5.4 billion. However, the actual cost escalated dramatically, reaching a staggering $30.9 billion. This sixfold increase highlights serious mismanagement and unforeseen expenses.

This should have been done many years ago but because of politics, protesters and first nations...... trying to build it turned into a nightmare. That's why Kinder Morgan wanted out, so instead of paying for a huge law suit the federal government bought it. Now the first nations wants to buy a piece of this pipeline using our tax dollars and then what would they do with it ? They wouldn't use it as ransom, no...they wouldn't do that.
