Ford government announces Science Centre to move to Ontario Place | FULL

Ontario Tourism Minister Neil Lumsden announced on Tuesday that the Science Centre would be moving to Ontario Place, as part of the transformation of the tourism spot. He said construction would begin in 2025 and the centre would remain open to the public.
He was joined by Premier Doug Ford and Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma.
Ford said the science centre “really needs to be revamped,” and suggested he’s eyeing its current site for housing.
Meanwhile, Ontario Place, which first opened in 1971, was closed to the public in 2012 after years of financial losses.

Very bad. The science center at Don Mills & Eglinton is in a much better position for the citizens to visit. Going to the Ontario Palace is not as convenient as going to the current location by the Eglinton Cross Town LRT. In addition, it's a waste of the tax dollar. The Premiere shall be smarter!

What about the Eglinton crosstown station "Science centre station" The line would of brought so many people to the centre, all jokes aside the line will open end of 2023. This smells of lobbying.

Ford says the old location is going to be used to address "a desperate need for housing". Housing for who exactly? We desperately need housing for the growing number of poorly-paid people who service the downtown core. Also for the HOMELESS. The land is gpvt owned and controlled and it cannot be allowed to falling the hands of real estate developers to make huge profits selling or renting to the affluent.

Closing the Science Centre for more housing supply is like demolishing Queens Park in favour of affordable housing. Besides, why should an old building occupy so much space right in the middle of downtown? Doug Ford is being very cynical with this move. I'll never forgive him if I lose the Science Centre.

Maybe they can temporarily house the homeless at the spa and huge underground parking area until all that affordable housing materializes. Why do you need parking when there will be a new public transit stop right there? Outlandish vision is a total waste of money.

How much money is Ford getting from the builders this time? Not enough with the Greenbelt deal. By the time he is done he is a billionaire. While we can't afford our mortgage and groceries. It must be nice to be a politician.

What Ford is not telling us that is that the new science center will be about 70% smaller,Along with much higher admission tickets, This will be a huge loss for Ontario , Just so Ford can make some money under-the-table

Demonstrates a lack of creativity and foresight. Affordable housing seems to permeate the arguments attempting to endorse any project. The Ontario Place could be Ontario's Centre of Science, Technology and Innovation. The Centre would be funded by the province, donors and admissions, concessions and work in collaboration with Ontario Universities' Science departments. It would include innovation and discovery labs, planetarium and it already has a cinema. This would not only propel Toronto in advancing Science to the world forum, attract corporate investment and jobs but be an attraction and encouragement to our city's underprivileged kids and boost Ontario's overall educational system.

So Ford’s solution to revitalizing Ontario Place is the move the Science Center cuz it’ll be so much easier to get to, especially if you can afford a boat. Yep, I’m sure all the people working multiple jobs will be taking full advantage of this latest version of Doug Ford’s bread and circuses. When Doug Ford claims austerity is the reason for lack of healthcare, education and housing, it’s always such a relief when he has millions for a new coliseum.

Actually, ontario place IS easier to get to and is more central and in an area where more people are likely to go. Not sure if you know this or not, but you can get there without a boat and without a car.

@@samg8012, given that I was there when both places opened and visited both at various times over the intervening years, I disagree. And the part about owning a boat, I was being facetious. There’ll be accommodations for boats but no mention of accommodating RVs. Seems like a lot of planning only to miss that niche group.

I like this idea. The science centre suits the surroundings. The old science centre is just that. Old. It seriously needs a revamp so why not just build something more interesting.

Or you could just revamp it instead of destroying such a memorable building. As someone who hates brutalism, I still love the existing Science Centre... and almost everyone does.
