Edmonton Oilers fans stunned as Stanley Cup dream dies in Florida: "We came close"

8 күн бұрынCanada’s latest attempt to bring the Stanley Cup home died dramatically on the edge of the Everglades on Monday, leaving fans from Edmonton to Florida thrilled at the ride but crushed at the destination.
The Oilers fell one game short of a comeback for the ages, winning three in a row to tie the final series only to drop the deciding Game 7 to the Florida Panthers by a score of 2-1.
Thousands of fans who packed the plaza outside Edmonton’s Rogers Place stood in stunned silence watching on a big screen as Panthers players celebrated behind their net and the Florida crowd littered the ice with their trademark good-luck black plastic rats.
Some in Edmonton threw their drinks toward the big screen, a few gave hugs to those standing in sadness, others started walking out with their hands jammed in their pockets.

As an Oilers fan I'd like to say you have several screws loose if you think we deserved it more than Florida. Yeah it sucks, obviously we're all gutted. But the better team won fair and square and we didn't show up when we really needed to. Huge respect to the Panthers. They got beat last year and came right back to win it a year later, massively impressive. I hope we can do the same, but there's not doubt Florida earned their cup. Enjoy it Panthers fans, we'll be back next year.

No, no you won't. You've got the cap to worry about now with all those bloated contracts, add to the fact Leon is OFFICIALLY in a contract year. If y'all are struggling by early spring, I'd expect Leon to skip town for Boston. THAT happens, and I'd also expect McDerp to demand out of Edmonton as well. You Oilers fans better pray to Gary Bettman that your GM has something other than "have 29/97 carry the team" as a plan, because after a decade, that plan has yet to win you a Cup

@@frederickglass1583 Respectfully I beg to differ. I think we will have Leon signed up by the end of this calendar year, and I can't see this team struggling by next spring. Yes I remember what happened this past season, I honestly don't think that will happen again. Once Leon signs Connor will sign as well. As for our GM, not sure if you're aware his contract is up. Whoever his replacement is, they have a lot more to say now than "29/97 carry the team". This team actually has depth now, not sure if you watched us this past season but neither Connor nor Leon led scoring. Get Janmark, Desharnais, and Corey Perry signed on new deals, slot Broberg into the D, and I think we're in a better place next year. IMHO

Born in Plantation Florida in 1986, moved to Sunrise and left Florida for Las Vegas in 1997. I rarely cry, I couldn’t contain myself. I’ve been waiting 31 years for this. That dope female who said Florida doesn’t deserve this.. because she’s a fan of the Oilers. It’s not just Americans who are delusional, the world itself is losing its minds. As a Panther fan, we had this heartbreak last year. Regardless of the fashion, it's the Cup. Being so close. It hurts. I believe the Oilers will be back. McDavid will get his cup. Nothing but respect to Edmonton and that fan base. I walked through a sea of Olier fans at the front of the arena for Game 7 and it was insane the passion being brought. Don't get me wrong, few douches here and there. At the end of the night, the first Oiler fan I saw shook my hand and said GG. It sucks one team had to lose and for this year it was Edmonton, but tip of the hat to you all. I hope you get back and soon.

Thank you Florida Panthers for beating the Oilers. I live in Edmonton and if the Oilers had won then all you would hear for the next two months is blah, blah, blah Oilers this and Oilers that. It's usually that way most of the time anyway and it would have been even more unbearable if they won the SC. Thank you from Edmonton for beating the Oilers and hopefully shutting them up for at least the rest of the summer. You deserved it a lot more than they did. Go Panthers!

I understand exactly what the Oilers Fanbase is feeling, being in 6th and 7th grade when the Utah Jazz lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls two consecutive years in a row… Michael Jordan stole my would’ve been a perfect childhood. 27 years later and it is still a very sore touchy subject. But look at it like this, do you have the best player on the right in the world on your team (for now) and your fan base is something that every NHL ownership would love to have. Edmonton Alberta is not in the international news much, so at least when you are you show up! I don’t think I ever saw one fan in the entire arena who did not have a oilers sweater on. Keep your head up, there’s a reason Lord Stanley’s cup is the hardest trophy to win in all sports.

In around about way the Flames screwed the Oilers out of this title by trading Bennett and Tkachuk to the Panthers. Without those two I don't think the Panthers win.

Maybe Oilers should have touched the WCF trophy to reverse the bad luck, maybe they shoulda played Kane in game 7 instead of Derek, maybe play Pickard instead of Stu to change it up. Too many what ifs. I can't see McDavid or Leon re-signing with Oilers as the defense and goaltending is too bad to fix.

I cant get over the TEARS, 1:20. Over a gam?! I lost my husband and my father 3 hours apart. Would that bring a tear to your eye, cuz losing a hockey game, that I'm not playing in, certainly wouldn't bring a tear to mine. Yes, disappointment, but come on people really? you're grown adults -be proud that you made it that far.. it was a great tug of war
