Don Cherry spoke Tuesday about his firing from "Coach's Corner" following a controversial rant on Saturday night, defending his comments about new immigrants not wearing poppies, but said he would have "used different words."
During the interview, he said had he been able to appear on-air on Nov. 16, he would've said, "I wish I had said 'everybody' instead of 'you people.'"
Pressed about his comments, Cherry said his comments weren't directed at minorities, and that what he said applies to anyone.

Calling people racist for stuff like this is getting so old and overused. Nothing about what he said was racist; an immigrant isn’t limited to a specific race.

The majority of new immigrants to Canada are non-white. He may not have had racist intent, but his comments were hurtful toward primarily non-whites. Therefore it's reasonable to view his comments as racist.

This woman reporter is brutal. Classic media. Just trying to push her view. Totally unbiased media. The guy just wants Canadians to wear poppies. Who cares if it sounded like it was targetted at immigrants. It's true isn't it, this is the country immigrants come where they don't have to adapt as much (as say the US).

@@seanhurley4003 The problem with that is that Canadians and Americans go to other parts of the world and still expect people to cater to them instead of integrating into their culture. When North Americans tour Europe they expect people to speak english and sell them food/items that are familiar to them and not of that culture. Another aspect of your hypocrisy is that if you were to go to another country - lets say China - and live there for a month. Would you wear Chinese national pride items to celebrate one of their holidays?Probably not right? I wouldn't either. And why should they expect you to? You are not from their country nor do you share their culture or experience. You might say "He wasn't talking about immigrants" (which is also what he said in this clip) but I think what ended his career is because he said the words "you people who come here" and no one would say "come here" if they were talking about natives. We all know he meant immigrants and now we all know he's bigoted and nationalistic.

@@matthiasschaus5112 Interesting you say that because I am Canadian and I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I actually took Cherries comments as reenforcment to show respect for the culture I live in. Immigrants in Canada can do as they wish, but I see nothing wrong with Cherry saying they should at least buy a poppy (re Free Speech). I think it's a good reminder for myself as well, since I can't say I've bought or even worn too many poppies in my life. Just cause I haven't done it much, doesn't I shouldn't, and there's nothing wrong with a reminder from someone like Cherry. To fire him for that. Utter nonsense.

@@seanhurley4003 I see what you're saying for sure. I am an American citizen and have lived in the middle east almost my entire life. However I still believe that saying "you people who come here" is divisive and instigates an us-and-them mentality. It's also disrespectful because he said "you people love our way of life and our milk and honey" which goes beyond just wanting people to buy a poppy and communicates a sense of anger and nonacceptance. For a country of immigrants this is not an acceptable way to speak for anyone. Since he didn't apologize I completely understand why he was fired. Also Canada doesn't believe in freedom of speech (see section 1 of the charter of rights and freedoms) but even if they did it would be totally fine for a news agency to decide someone is using hate speech and that he or she should be fired. That obviously wouldn't mean their freedom of speech would be jeopardized as they would have to face no legal fine or punishment.

@T R Canadians born and raised in the city don't know vets and don't wear poppies which I've been told by a Canadian veteran who believes if white Canadians want "everyone" to purchase and wear a poppy they should be taught the history and be included socially before 'they' are ostracized for not buying a poppy because they contribute just as much. Should he have been fired? No, because everyone should be educated on the poppy, everyone should be educated on why his choice of words was uncalled for, his comments seemed racist because of the current space we are in (i.e. Trump and his blatantly racist base and actions). This should have been addressed and discussed publicly because it seems like he isn't racist and he claims he wasn't targeting non-white immigrants in his statement. I agree he shouldn't have been fired because it sets a bad precedent and people need to discuss things before they jump the gun and say: "he's racist, time to boycott" causing the network to panic and fire him. But it wrong to uneducated people on the history and expect them to blindly support what you want them to, and to do so forcefully.

though I don't 100% agree with his opinion, I don't think he deserved to be fired over this. Sadly, I guess corporate? wants to save face and immediately sever ties with him. I understand his pov but he made it seem like only immigrants were doing this but in actuality a lot of Canadian born don't wear it as well. I do agree about the milk and honey part, Canada has done alot for immigrants, but I also believe that most generations after them contribute to society as well (there are some bad apples though).

Oh, god I never thought about it like that jeez. Don is amazing I loved Coaches Corner. He did have a point, that people should be buying poppies to pay respect, but the way it came out was wrong. We also have to remember that this is an 85 year old man. He is getting to a point where, with old people that they begin to forget things like words, for example he was looking for words before he commented “You people”. You also need to remember that he was raised in a different era. Yes his words came out racist, yes he said those words when he shouldn’t have. I would like to think this is minor, a mere man but I forget that he said this to a million viewers... I would like to point out neither side was right. Yes people should buy poppies, yes his words were racist, yes he technically has the right of free speech, yes he insulted the veterans of different heritage, race, ethnicity. I don’t think he should be able to hide behind the status of elderly and he isn’t which makes me happy but he should be a little more cautious and mind himself. We should respect the point he tried to make and the point that it came out offensive and racist. Both sides are right and I think we should work towards both aspects of equality and respect. If only he had said “Everybody” instead of “You People”. I loved Coaches Corner...

Hope he gets a podcast or something. Coach's Corner was never long enough, especially when he would generously devote some of it to talking about a sick child, or injured or fallen solder, often with so much emotion you could feel it on the other side of the screen. He's one of a kind and I'd hate to think this is his end. He's got a lot more to give, and talk about.

Joe Hoe You’re right. And there were epic battles between the Irish, Scottish, and English in Canada who I suspect is who you are talking about. I saw those screaming matches. It’s because they had a history of trying to wipe each other off the face of the earth. Pretty soon there will be battles of who vaccinated who into genetic oblivion across lines we are barely conscience of. When I was in Spain the hotel owners said the hatred of European tourists from different countries was rancid. Your story is no surprise. You have no acceptance for Don having cleverly ignored the many wonderful things he does. Seems to me you are boiling in the same pot.

@@joering4461 Ron has sat beside Don for years and worked with him. You obviously have never heard him talk. He's a good man and a good person and they both have done a lot for each others career and you heard Don. They are still friends. That wouldn't be the case if he set him up and he sure as hell wouldn't knowingly hurt people or the game. It's different when you go back and look at things after the fact. People are going on and on that the Leafs should have beat the crap out of the Philly player after Marner got hurt. Easy to say when you can look at the replay and slow motion. Nobody, even Marner knew what happened and you can tell because the trainer is looking at Marner funny like, "what happened?" is going through his mind. Obviously it's a totally different situation but the point is from both Ron and Don's perspective they didn't know how it came across until after it aired. That's why Don said he should have said everyone instead of you people. It shouldn't have been about immigrants but people who don't support vets.

In fact, exactly the opposite, that too is a clear form of tyranny, not freedom. Manipulation isn't freedom. If a government is taking your money and not working to improve your standard of living then taking that money is just plain theft. Any government can do that. If these soldiers had a choice and could see what their governments have done, half of them would have just stayed home!" Sorry, you are not making much sense.

@Charles McCarron "Then you're beyond reasoning and logic. Good luck to you and the country you're permitted to vote in :)" The initial thread mentioned "you people" as racist. You meandered into the subject of politics as if you have something of value to contribute to the initial thread. You euthanized your pet peeve even before it exited the gate. You display a zany thought process that has no relevance to the subject at hand. Good luck to you and the occupied country you are permitted to squat in.
