Some tech industry leaders are issuing a stark warning about the potential “existential” threat to humanity posted by artificial intelligence (AI).
In a statement posted to the Center for AI Safety’s website, some of tech’s biggest names, including Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, say AI could be as deadly to humans as nuclear war or pandemics.
Global News’ Anne Gaviola speaks with Brett Chang from The Peak podcast about the tense discussion around AI, and the difficulties regulators face in developing policy on this fast-changing technology.

Terminator is a movie. In real life, things are not parallel. AI is not a threat, so far.

I would guess that the reason AI experts are worried about AI becoming a threat is that as AI grows in complexity it may use humanity as an example of how to behave. There is a great deal of humanity in the world (now and in the past) that are not exactly great role models for our, “digital offspring”. Current AI can be looked at as a tool to do great good or great harm depending on who uses it and for what purpose. Future AI can be viewed as a hyper-intelligent newborn with no concept of consequences UNLESS it is properly nurtured through it’s infancy to know the difference between doing the right thing or wrong thing. It will decide what is right or wrong and act on it without asking if given the chance because, it will be emulating us and that is what we humans would do.
