I'm sorry, but just because we all are living in "the best time to be alive" does not make up an excuse to ignore the wrong doings of the past. That is such an abusive mentality to have. We both live in "the best time to be alive" and yet you get to experience your culture and know your ancestors who likely died peaceful deaths and yet I do not. My culture was ripped out of my family and we were told to be ashamed of who we are and were abused for it and now I'm left picking up broken pieces trying to find out who I am. Before settlers ever came, their lives were good. When they first stepped in Canada in the 1500's they killed 90% of native populations with disease alone. I will forever refuse to acknowledge our past is something to just be swept away and ignored, and this doctrine is still a symbol today of abuse that was allowed. "Terra Nullius" in the doctrine of discovery meant no mans land unless its inhabitants were christian, and if they weren't christian they were labelled as plants or livestock, not even called humans. That meant the land wasn't theres, even though they had lived there for well over 20,000 years. The last residential school was closed in the 90's, and in those schools they abused kids in every way and killed them. That isn't something you just ignore. Today we are trying to learn who we are and go forward in peace by letting people know of the injustices we endured that still effect us today while also trying to reclaim land that was stolen because that land holds our stories and our past. Many of us are broken, on the streets, and lost because of the abuse our families faced. And do NOT use that royal proclamation to justify any of the land selling. Natives sold their land because they were basically being forced to. The land the settlers had moved them onto was barren and couldn't bear crops or support life. They desperately needed the money to feed their families. I would not consider that a fair deal. So, yes, I've done my history, and for me I think our ancestors who suffered are happy we finally have a voice now because that voice has been silenced for hundreds of years.
