Developers in Ontario had direct influence over the province’s decision to extract lands from the Greenbelt and received “preferential treatment,” Ontario’s auditor general found in a blistering special report that showed the Ford government began working to remove protected land as soon as it won re-election.
The explosive report from Bonnie Lysyk into the government’s dealings with developers comes after a six-month investigation and interviews with key players in the controversial decision, including Premier Doug Ford, who denied any wrongdoing.
The report, however, makes a definitive link between the Premier’s Office, the housing minister, a central political staffer who drove the project, and developers who benefitted from the deal.
According to the auditor general, the owners of 15 parcels of land removed from the Greenbelt could see the value rise by $8.3 billion.

Another idiocy worth noting, is how we farm to begin with. We dont bother with the inclusion of easily installed filters at field runoff drainage points, of which there are many. Phosphorus doesnt have the ability to care about its actions on the ecosystem, and neither does the greed that encourages pretending that it doesnt matter and pretending that species get to live more than only once like non atheist cats with 9 stupid fantasy themed lives.

When the lands failed to meet the development standards to allow for a removal, the criteria was changed to specifically allow pieces of land owned by developers with access to the government to be removed. Of the 7,400 acres extracted, 6,700 -- or 92 per cent -- was removed as a direct result of developer access to the chief of staff.” Just absolute, blatant corruption.

AGREED! As a renter, we just got notice that a verbalized promise was ignored, and LL is selling, trying to get out of the law of residing on property for 12 months! I blame Ford for what we and TOO MANY others are going through! We cannot afford the rents, and we have been denied a mortgage, simply b/c we live within our means and REFUSE credit cards!!! If it was another party, Pierre Poilievre and CONS would be screaming corruption. At the end of the day, a handful of folks make billions on the backs of poor, hardworking families. I remember about 20 years ago when there were more houses than buyers. As a result, home affordability was achievable. Now, the housing market is manipulated to benefit a few. Even if the market is glutted right now with construction of 2 million homes, it will take years before affordability can be achieved.

The AG just verified what we knew all along! Doug Ford you and your housing minister should resign today. In your response today to her report, you said you had to build on the Greenbelt. Before you even opened the greenbelt your 1.5 million homes were already designated to spaces OUTSIDE the greenbelt by your own housing ministry.. so why open up the greenbelt? You also reduced developers fees so what were you talking about fees would improve roads, hospitals,school etc, how will that happen with the developers reduced developers fees.?

I also read developers no longer have to pay sewage hydro and water infrastructure into a development. The gov't will and thus the buyers will have an even higher property tax. Not sure if I read this wrong.

This is news? City councillors and mayors across both Ontario as well as British Columbia continue expediting rezoning applications for luxury developments, especially in Vancouver, in exchange for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of amenities for RICH NEIGHBOURHOODS. Just this past year, city councillors and the mayor of Vancouver expedited re-zoning applications luxury developers applied for and got $420M in amenities for already rich neighbourhoods. While more and more tents and drug addicts popped up on East Hastings and while zoning for affordable apartment buildings, supportive housing, etc sit collecting dust constantly being delayed. City councillors are a major MAJOR problem when it comes to combatting the affordable housing crisis.

1.5 million homes in 10 years. Housing ministry had allocated the entire 1.5 million housing to Ontarios municipality. good luck with that. you need to be an immigrant willing to live with at least 9 other people if you want access to affordable housing that isn't tofu apartments and condos

Not affordable. Planned communes with small homes are an option.

What we need is a stop to foreign investors. I work on construction sites where homes Stay vacant for years... and we need to start bringing in imagrannts who build homes not doctors and engineers that can't practice. People in the trades are retiring they are getting old.
