Hazel Trembath Elementary School was attended by roughly 250 students - all of them now wondering where they will continue their studies.
Coquitlam RCMP have deemed the fire “suspicious.”

Actually looks like a blessing in disguise, having a school without a functioning sprinkler system and constructed in a way that the fire continues to spread even after the arrival of firefighters was a potential for tragedy. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the school can be rebuilt to a modern standard; undoubtedly, it will be a real upheaval for the staff and students for at least the remainder of this school year, but certainly something that can be managed.

It is curious that a school was built with flammable materials. Every school I've ever been to (many in southern Ontario) have all been of brick or concrete construction.

@Kisai_Yuki 10 ай бұрын
@@robertshiell887 That's actually incorrect. Most "new" public schools built after 1950 but before 2010 are concrete or cinderblock because they are built to withstand a bomb. Government buildings (schools, colleges, post offices, police stations) were bomb targets of the sons of freedom in the 1920's to 1960's, and because of "oh no nuclear bogeyman" scares. Only since 2009 have schools started being built with wood again, and those must be sprinklered. The school in question was built in the 70's, and sprinklers were not required until 1992. For those who maybe have never went to a school in BC. There are annual fire drills, usually in the fall, and had the fire started during class time, all the students would have been evacuated before the fire spread. This was always considered "good enough" for elementary and primary schools. Many small community school buildings were shut down in the 80's and students started being bussed, sometimes an hour away to larger schools. The reason this fire ultimately gutted the school is because it apparently started while nobody was in the building, and likely had an hour before someone saw it burning. Why it didn't have at least automatic fire alarms to alert the fire department or at least the principal or school district staff is a bit of a worry.
@robertshiell887
@robertshiell887 10 ай бұрын
@@Kisai_Yuki Not sure where you live, but here in the Interior of BC all the schools that I attended were wood construction and built in the (circa.) late fifties. The latest two schools built in this area were frame construction (1980 and 2001). I’m sure surviving a nuclear strike may have been a consideration in some school districts, but here (and the adjoining districts) wood frame construction was the norm.

My children’s school had a fire too just over a decade ago and I would encourage the greater community, if you feel inclined to help, a tangible way to do that is to support lower income families or those with multiple kids in the school. Fire only gutted a portion of our school but smoke, water and heat got into every single classroom and hallway. One of my kids classrooms was on the far side of the school and they still lost the classroom pet from the intense heat. Major damage was done! Our fire was also in October and so winter coats, indoor shoes, the clothing they keep forgetting to bring home, and every school supply you purchased for them 6 weeks earlier is now either destroyed or smoke filled. A salvage crew goes in, catalogues everything, and boxes it up, then it takes to be professionally cleaned. That took 4.5 months for us. In the meantime your kids still need a new coat, clothing, school supplies, etc. That’s a huge financial burden for low income families to undertake so soon after just doing it in September. If you want to help these families, even a $25 Walmart gift card or a jacket your child grew out of will help. I had home owners insurance that I could use, but we had to first wait until we got our box back with items that they had been able to save and a list of the stuff they couldn’t before I could make a claim. It was 5 months before I could see reimbursement, and so I still had to find the money somewhere to buy new coats, indoor shoes, school supplies, etc which made the holidays extra tight for us. It was rough. Please consider helping these families if you can. Wishing all involved the very best.

I remember when this school was built on Marry Hill to accompany the new residences as the area was developed south of Eastern and Western drive at the top of the hill, we lived in one of the first homes on the hill built by Block Brothers on Denise place. I saw the original bill of sale for $19,600.00 and the interest rates at the time were 18%! Mary Hill and later Kilmer Elementary schools were the first and further north into PoCo was Central Elementary. Lots of schools for that area in those times.. Sad to see things disappear, especially when done through intentional destruction.

I’m super surprised a building of this size and a school did not have a sprinkler system
@guilfordterminal
@guilfordterminal 10 ай бұрын
Many of our schools got sprinkler systems added after the fact. Lots of the older ones had little fire proof construction however. The most important thing is to make sure the staff and students are well trained to get out when a fire/smoke is detected. I worked all of my schools to completely empty in 90 seconds or less. Sometimes it took some practice, but after a few tries we always got there.

One of my teacher magazines (I'm retired now) said a principal decided to make a fire drill more realistic. He set off a smoke bomb in his own wastebasket; the kids smelled the smoke and went *bonkers*. Makes me think our drills should include smoke bombs.

I don't think that would be a good idea. If there was a panic and someone got hurt you can bet the schoolboard would be sued. Practice makes perfect and even when we actually had fires at schools where I was at (only small thank goodness) the kids stayed calm and followed their training. @@veramae4098

Oh look! A suspicious fire that started in the middle of the night and all the surrounding trees didn't catch on fire. Been a lot of these the past few years. Did we already forget Lahaina? The fire was on the outside of the building when the fire fighters arrived. So it got inside and engulfed the whole school AFTER the fire fighters arrived. Another highly suspicious situation...
