DeSantis signs bill banning gender-affirming treatment in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday signed into law a bill that bans gender-affirming treatment such as puberty blockers or hormone therapy for transgender youth, and also enacts obstacles for adults to access this same treatment.
Such bills were once mostly limited to regulating changing rooms and women's sports, but have expanded to limiting healthcare access even for transgender adults. In some cases, legislation has sought to charge parents and doctors with child abuse if they provide treatment to transgender youth.
"This will permanently outlaw the mutilation of minors," DeSantis said at a bill-signing ceremony in Tampa.
"I mean they're trying to do sex change operations on minors, giving them puberty blockers and doing things that are irreversible to them," the Republican governor said. "We think this is very wrong."

In my opinion if they cared about someone in the woman’s bathroom who isn’t a woman they shouldn’t let men (trans men) in the girls bathroom. Not that I’ll think that something bad will happen but it is just common sense. You want to protect women then let men go into the men’s bathroom. PERIOD. From what I've been reading, Gender Affirming Care is 95% social acceptance stuff like testing out names, pronouns and expressions, and then analysis to make sure said child is actually trans or experiencing something different.

Hormone blockers don’t cause irreversible effects. For the hormone addition part of hormonal transition, sure counselling is one thing but this bill is banning it outright. You'd think after months/years of purely social gender affirming care, followed by months of reversible puberty blockers and early hormone therapy, all fully consensual and approved my medical and psychology professionals, people would be able to figure out whether they want the permanent stuff or not. Real gender affirming care is a LONG and EXHAUSTIVE process. For fear of someone wanting to detransition after YEARS of qualifying for and consenting to every given option, these bills prevent youth from accessing the most BASIC aspects of this care.

I heard some people should say they want this for their child because it will save their lives and I heard other people say they should do it at least when there are adult so I don’t think I’m going to tell you which is the best, as I don’t have a child nor I transition as one I started transitioning when I was like 23 so I don’t know what you want me to say to that but I know these things are permanent. Somethings are reversible and other things are not, for example, the breast or irreversible, assuming if you did any type of surgery to remove you’re you know what that’s also ireversible and depending on how long you’ve been on estrogen or testosterone, those things can also be permanent and etc. whether you support it or not some of these things save people, and some of them actually regret it I’m not a doctor or anything I’m just a person that took it so I don’t know what you want for me

Gender affirming care? It doesn’t allow minors to have a reversible surgeries that are unnecessary. If you feel like a woman or a man, then why do you need surgery? Especially as a small child. Get all the surgeries you want as an adult. Why would you want a child to have irreversible surgeries or hormone therapies that will cause irreversible changes? Why would you want a child to do that? Why wouldn’t you want them to mature and be able to make decisions based on an adult mentality and not a child’s mentality?

Puberty blockers just delay puberty and give a kid a chance a few more years to decide what they want. If they choose not to transition they can continue puberty like normal. It has been shown to be safe and doesn't have surgery involved

This is terrifying. We have SO many people from Florida here in Washington state. I left Florida some years ago. Last time I was living there was for Obama's second term. My new roommate here in Washington just fled Florida. Florida will never be a swing state again. We're both trans. Minorities are leaving Florida. Except Cubans. They are surrounded by enoigh Cubans in Miami to the point Cubans think of themselves as "white". They don't understand Republicans would discriminate against them. And then Republicans run Spanish ads in Miami saying Democrats are communists. Cubans believe those falst political ads and vote red. Our system is broken.

Aren't the new laws just about people under 18. I am in no way judging being trans, but many young people do change their views. There are outspoken trans women who are understanding of women being uncomfortable undressing with trans women who are intact. (I personally would be at least startled) I'm in Canada & trans athletes can compete without any hormone treatments. Would appreciate your viewpoint on these specifics. Of course trans people should be treated with respect. My biggest concern is men pretending to be trans, as is happening in Canada. How can that be addressed?

As of today we don't allow kids under 18 to smoke cigerattes, smoke or take drugs, or drink booze. We don't even let kids drive a vehicle until a certain age, and they have to pass tests. So why would we allow kids under 18 to have any surgeries, or drugs that can permenantly alter those kids.

look kids today can't smoke cigerattes, they can't smoke or take drugs, they can't drink booze. Kids can't even drive a car until they reach a certain age, and pass some tests. Yet some of these people think kids should be able to take puberty blockers, or be on hormones, and even be allowed to get gender affirming surgeries, like castration, or having your breasts removed. All before the age of 18. These kids that still want that stuff, they then need more mental health care treatments, first and foremost.

If it's agreed that minors cannot consent to sex or tattoos, it stands to the same logic that they are not able to consent to cosmetic surgery or amputation based on their emotion. You shouldn't remove a minor's organs because they said they want you to. I have a related question.. What is the difference between someone who is transgender and what I would consider similar mental disorders like schizophrenia and why should I agree to a transgender child's requests to perform mental health based permanently body-altering surgery on them when I do not agree to a schizophrenic child's requests to perform mental health based permanently body-altering surgery on them?

I don't believe it entirely bans gender-affirming care with the exception of children under 18. If you're wanting your health insurance to cover the cost of your gender-affirming care, then fight the insurance companies on that--and good luck. Nobody wants to pay for care that doesn't save your life. What I mean by that is, if you're unhappy with your looks and you want plastic surgery to make yourself happy, health insurance won't pay for it. If you're infertile and suffering from severe depression because of it and require assistance in getting pregnant, health insurance won't pay for that either. Many transgendered activists state that gender-affirming care saves lives. Nobody has ever died because they were born a certain gender--there's no physical cause of death. If you trying to say that people have no choice other than to commit suicide--that's a lie as well. There is no physical cause or illness created by not being the correct gender. Suicide is a choice-period, end of story.

He says minors in his special speech, but the different bills I've been seeing pass through, especially ones regarding medical care, are making it infinitely more difficult for transgender adults. Children should be educated, protected, and those who are legitimately transgender should be supported, have the ability to safely transition once they come of age. That is now practically impossible in Florida. Rather than actively discuss what is appropriate for children to learn in school, and what services should be available to legitimate transgender youth in line with expert child psychology and medical advice, Florida has shut everything down. Children who need help and care are being denied, and are comitting suicide as a result.
