It's been a deadly start to the summer for grizzly bears in Alberta. Four were killed in just one week on the same stretch of highway in Yoho National Park.
This comes after a program designed to protect bears, the Bear Guardian program, was cancelled.
Parks Canada said it had staff monitoring the bears around the clock, and even implemented a list of measures including reduced speed zones. But despite ramped up efforts, they were unable to save the grizzlies from traffic on the highway.
Global’s Jayme Doll reports.

Whatever the posted speed limit only matters if it is followed. Everyone is driving at 105-110km/hr in a 90 zone through the Parks because we’ve got 4 lane divided freeways that are designed for higher speeds and there’s very little enforcement. Wildlife has little chance.🤷‍♂️

I know most people living in their apartments in cities think of a grizzly bear as this friendly animal and should be protected. Sadly that is far from reality . Increased speeding fines and suspensions of licenses, it is negligent drivers who speed putting wildlife, other people's and their own lives at risk causing most of the 11,000 wildlife collisions in BC, with similar numbers in Alberta. It is the provincial gov't who can increase driving penalties. Wildlife and other people are often innocent bystanders who lose their lives to irresponsible, self focused, entitled driving, jail sentences for reckless driving causing injury or death ect...which is federally determined. But increased fines will help to reduce speed and can readily be done provincially.

@@Lickymaballs Try this though not my responsibility as i didnt post the initial wrong comment. Grizzlies are designated as "species of special concern" in Canada. Hunting, other than by aboriginal groups, has been illegal in Alberta since 2006 in an effort to protect the limited 900 Grizzlies in that large Province. The highest concern is for mature female grizzlies that can birth cubs. In contrast, BC reports about 14,000 bears due to a much larger habitat, but they are protected by tight regulations. More to do with ethical-moral-political issues in BC leading to hunting bas than about species protection. Again, the story was only about BC-AB bears. FACTS!
