Dam failure causes house to collapse into flood-swelled river in Minnesota

A house, occupied by a local family for more than 50 years, collapsed into the Blue Earth River near a flooded dam in Minnesota on Tuesday. Concerns have risen over the condition of the 114-year-old Rapidan Dam as heavy rain, erosion, and severe flooding continue to affect southern Minnesota.
Captain Paul Barta of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office explained that debris lodged in the dam led to water flow restrictions.
"Dam has been on free flow for the last few years. With that obstruction, the water needed to find somewhere to go and ultimately created a new path on the west side of the dam and kind of undermined that side of the structure," he said.
Community members gathered along the river bank to view the scene of the house toppling into the river.

The damn didn't fail it's still setting in the same spot where it was built the ground on the left side of the damn failed

it's not extreme weather, it's lack of upkeep. these are normal heavy-rain events.

Yup. The dam did not fail. All the sluice gates were wide open and they allowed debris to build up in front of them and limit the flow thru them. The water level rose and finally found a way around the intact dam. And the trickle quickly became what they have now.

Do people who live in flood zones ever consider… not living in flood zones? Do they do it to punish themselves or something? They KNOW they’re going to get flooded but they act surprised every time it happens. Like how people in Tornado alley are surprised when the area lives up to its name, IT’S IN THE NAME FOLKS.

Republican States like Missouri added additional spillways to dams over a decade ago to prepare for the forecast 100 year floods . Worked great at Tablerock Lake in Branson Missouri !!!!
