Critically endangered gorilla gives birth at Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo in Czech Republic welcomed a newborn western lowland gorilla on Thursday, after 10-year-old Duni gave birth to her very first cub.
The western lowland gorilla has been considered a “critically endangered” mammal by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2016.
The zoo plans to transfer the baby to a different zoo once it matures to help the threatened species breed and populate further.
“The birth of the baby and the breeding of it is very important for the whole gorilla's group, because the social structure of the group is set like that,” Jan Mengr, the institution’s zookeeper said on Thursday.

Cub?!? Baby gorillas are not called cubs, they're called infants. While this is very exciting news, please do your research, Global News.

Such a sweet angel,, m actually glad they do save them and keep them safe,,, of course captivity is sad but these gorillas would be gone forever if these measures weren’t take, gods bless this sweet animal

They shouldn't be in a zoo in the 1st place! If they have to be give them rich environments that are most like their natural ones! As large as possible!! Give them kind care, excellent medical treatment and the best diet❣❣❣❣

Get rid of zoos...awful that these beautiful and strong creatures live out their lives in such small spaces...they have miles to roam in the wild. And why are they endangered? Man.

Chinese 🇨🇳 government let its winemakers use parts of endangered animals, leopards and pangolins, as ingredients in their products.

... why isn't it in a natural environment where it's still protected? ... their first thought is when the young Gorilla gets older they're just going to separate it from its family so another facility can profit off of it ... sounds very exploitative. I do not support this.

They have to separate them. It's what happens in the wild. Do you want the males to kill each other or interbreed with their families? Because that's what will happen.

They are heavily hunted in the wild. Its insane how many of them are hunted, its sad but the safest place where they can be is in the Prague ZOO, i have been there like 7 times and they have so much space and they take care of them the best. No wonder its one of the best zoos in the world care wise.

It is also a long complicated process to reintroduce zoo born gorillas back to the wild, they are used to humans, so they would not feel any danger if they were to encounter dangerous poachers. Gorillas in the wild can naturally separate from their family when they are mature so that they can find their own partner to start a new family with, it works very similarly when zoos exange animals like this to avoid inbreeding.

I’m still sad they castrated Ajabu! He comes from a great line! His uncle Shabani is the most handsome gorilla in the world! Uncle Haoko looks just like Grandpa Kibabu. I’m thinking that Troop leaders need fewer wives and give the bachelor Silverbacks a chance to join the Gene pool🧬
