Brazil floods: Animals stranded, families displaced as heavy rains continue

Rio Grande do Sul continues to be battered by heavy rains after catastrophic flooding swept Brazil’s southernmost state last week, leaving not just tens of thousands of people displaced, but animals stranded, too.
In Canoas, a single horse, which footage showed trapped on the roof of a building, has been captured, while rescuers worked to save dozens of dogs trapped in a building in the state capital of Porto Alegre.
One Porto Alegre family relocated completely to a shelter on an overpass, while a man in Eldorado do Sul has been using his wheel loader to transport displaced residents and family to safety.
More than 155,000 people have been left homeless, without food or water amid the floods. As of Wednesday, 131 people are still unaccounted for and 90 have died, according to the state’s civil defence agency.
Though regional rain is predicted to let up on Thursday, more is forecasted over the weekend.

Brazil & Africa are both drowning. 😔🙏 The dogs, once hungry enough, will attack the smaller & weaker to consume. It happened when Katrina hit & levees broke in the south, almost 20 yrs ago now. At least there, some were able to flee. Those dogs are all pent up together. Not a good situation at all. This is where we get the saying, ‘pack mentality’ from. They will develop that, quickly. You already see a skirmish between them. :\ It won’t be pretty if they’re not rescued. Survival of the fittest. 😔

Unfortunately, the horse hasn't been rescued yet. Some Brazilian celebrities are pooling their efforts to try to rescue it by helicopter. The poor horse has been standing on the roof for five days without food. I hope everything will be alright, and it is rescued as soon as possible

This tragedy could have been avoided, if it were not for the negligence and lack of prioritization of the city's representatives regarding the maintenance and hiring of specialized personnel for periodic maintenance and renovation of the dikes. Now with the destruction and death of people, they should be held criminally responsible!

I am Brazilian and it's difficult to say that this tragedy in the south of the country could have been avoided. There were floods before, but this is something unprecedented there. We also have had an unusual heat since October while normal strong heat would be between December until March.

Nunca imaginei que onde moro iria aparecer no mundo todo. Moro neste bairro mathias velho em Canoas. moro mais perto das 2 antenas (altas vermelhas) e da escola thiago wurth. É DESOLADOR perder tudo, e ainda eu e avminha esposa de 8 meses haviamos deixado tudo pronto para o nosso Thomas chegar... É muito dificl, mas vamos nos reerguer e conquistar tudo novamente no tempo certo. o dique (que protegia o bairro mathias velho e os bairros da br116 em direção ao rio dos sinos) tem mais de 6m de altura por 5 de largura no topo e 7km de comprimento na extensão pelo bairro. AGORA Imagine que a agua passou por cima disso, pois ainda nao vimos um local do rompimento. na madrugada de sabado essa agua toda encheu o bairro em 4-5 horas. tem 100mil pessoas morando só na mathias velho e tivemos que sair correndo com sirenes de emergencia. e do outro lado de canoas, pelo rio gravatai e dos sinos, a agua pegou os bairros mato grande, rio branco , fatima e 5 colonias sem dó. na mathias velho por exemplo, hoje a casa da minha familia é no segundo piso dos meus pais, e a agua bateu na parte de cima do marco da porta. todas as caixas abaixo de 5-6m estao submersas ali... e nessa parte do começo do video é a entrada alta da mathias velho. ali tem uns 3m de agua no minimo. como se pode ver nos postes e na imagem. é terrivel o que esta havendo de chuvas aqui. hoje e ontem deu sol, mas na semana antes da enchente aqui, choveu mais de 600l de agua por m² no RS. é algo nunca presenciado antes o que houve. quem desejar saber mais siga ou acesse o meu perfil no instagram @daniel.friedrich pois nao sou de colocar apenas o que a tv mostra...

Really? You cant come up with a single idea after seeing rhe water up over the eves of the building? Are you simply unaware that horses can swim and will climb up the bank where they come out? Thos roofnis like an island ...the horse is swimming in the flood...and swims up on the roof and walks from the submerged part at the eves up to the peak. You couldnt imagine that?

There was also a man who rescued three little girls and these three girls who were inside the boat asked him to pick up a doll that was floating for them and when he went to pull it out of the water this doll was a dead baby. 😢

I don't know, but some type of powerful drainage machine would be useful to help drain this area! The natural gradient is small but I think it would help! The forecast is for a lot of rain again, not like before, but the situation should get worse in the coming days....

Animais também são vidas, além do mais que não são marinhos por um motivo, qualquer um que nada se cansa. Se bombeiros vêem um animal precisando de ajuda, óbvio que vão ajudar. Agora, na sua opinião eles devem ignorar um cavalo a vista que obviamente está indefeso e precisando de ajuda, e procurar por pessoas que não estão? Ambos são importantes, ajudar é bom como puder e por quem puder, não importa o que.
