United Conservative Party Leader Danielle Smith and New Democratic Party Leader Rachel Notley squared off in a provincial election debate on Thursday evening, where the leaders debated topics such as health care, taxes, and more.
This followed Alberta's ethics commissioner finding Smith undermined democracy and broke conflict-of-interest rules by intervening in a criminal case and pressuring her attorney general to "make it go away.”
Plus, on Wednesday, newly-published polling results suggested the race to become premier remains incredibly close, and the debate could play a factor in the political contest.
In a recent Global/Ipsos poll that asked for opinions from 800 Albertans who are eligible to vote, 43 per cent of respondents said Thursday’s televised leaders debate “will be an important factor in my vote decision.” Another 40 per cent disagreed with that statement, while 16 per cent said they don’t know.
The Alberta provincial election takes place on May 29.

@@orcrun5233 nothing is free. Canadians are highly taxed and at least 50% of our taxes go to healthcare. I’d rather have lower taxes, lead a healthy lifestyle, and only access healthcare when truly needed. I get tired with publicly funded doctors performing unnecessary surgeries on people just to pad their income. Do 50% of women really need a caesarean or a hysterectomy? Are you aware how much money surgeons like gynaecologists make?

People in Alberta need to remember when Notley had a full four years in power. She was totally in line with Trudeau and Alberta went down hill faster than I can remember ever in our province. Immediately a carbon tax was implemented and photo ops with Trudeau were rampant. Farmers weren’t supposed to hire their own children etc… Small businesses suffered the most through a huge increase in the minimum wage and increases in business taxes. Remember that the NDP will follow the lead of Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh and not in the interest of ever day Albertans.

So if the NDP puts in place a program to protect people from price spikes, they get hated. If they do nothing and people experience price hikes, they get hated. It seems that for some people, the NDP can do no right. And the UCP can do no wrong. I’d love to be a UCP politician. Seems like the easiest job in the world - people will vote for you no matter what. You can be homophobic, racist, transphobic, privatize public entities, and probably even murder someone, but your voters will happily find excuses for you.. if you’re a UCP politician, that is. The ignorance in this province runs deep. Just incredible. Thankfully, younger people and folks from Ontario/BC coming to AB will help drag this province from the sewers of conservatism to a modern society.

Most of what Notley comments on regarding our medical system in the last 4 years was Kenney trying to trim the "fat" from the medical unions that the NDP had plumped up. It was the AHC's upper management that started cutting doctors and nurses so that management could retain their status. The NDP government trashed the corporate taxes by raising them 38%. Companies folded up their tents and moved elsewhere. The official stats state over 180,000 jobs were lost during the NDP reign. The actual number is far over 200,000 due to the independent small businesses that depended on the official corporate numbers. We already have carbon capture technology developed here in Alberta. These systems also capture other emissions, separate them, and store them for sale in other industries. This tech is also being used across north America. The pipeline to Tidewater was built by the conservatives and near completion when the NDP accidently won. Why doesn't Notley run on her record and keep attacking the UCP for what happened after Klein stepped down and the CP deadbeats took over...which got Notley elected and sank our economy even further. We have never been so close to bankruptcy as with the NDP government.

Where I live, many people use the ER as a walk-in clinic. Most are either drug-seeking or dealing with self-inflicted symptoms such as hangovers. The survey I filled out asked if I believed people who abused the ER should be asked to pay for their visit as it cost around $500 for the nurses to treat a patient and more if a doctor is involved. I do. We have multiple walk-in clinics available and there's no need to overload the ER. Our healthcare system is currently overloaded and just in our small city, we've had dozens of new doctors and nurses come into the area thanks to the UCP's policies, we're getting an operating theatre in our hospital and an upgraded facility for radiology. All under the current UCP. The NDP cost us 1/3 of our doctors and nurses, closed off one hospital wing, and all prescriptions almost doubled in cost.

Lol. I hate Trudeau myself, but are UCP voters really this ignorant? Do you actually think Trudeau controls the rate of inflation? The inflation that we've been experiencing currently is a global phenomenon. Pandemic played its part in increasing inflation, and climate change is going to worsen it. But yeah blame everything on Trudeau and Notley.

Notley did 3 things CONSISTENTLY whenever she was asked a question. She said: “that’s a good question”, “I have a plan” & instead of providing the details of her plans, she ket VICIOUSLY attacking Smith verbally. We KNOW Smith’s accomplishments since she took office 7 months. We KNOW where she stands on climate change & the direction she wants to move Alberta towards & she DEFINITELY has the BACKBONE to stand up against Trudeau & Singh. Notley WILL NOT. She DID NOT in 2015 to 2019. In 2015 she shut down Alberta’s coal mining so Alberta was FORCED to purchase electricity from Montana -- paying HIGHER prices. We have NO IDEA how MUCH her plans are going to cost taxpayers, what those plans are & WHERE the money is going to come from. The $1.2 BILLION she’s committed to Calgary to BUY votes is NOT enough money to pay for her promises. Danielle was poised, unruffled, articulate, provided details & strategy. Notley was only interested in taking JABS at Smith & provided NO INFORMATION whatsoever. The Calgary Sun headline read “Notley CHAMPIONS healthcare. Notley CHAMPIONED NOTHING in last night’s debate.

This debate, and Smith, definitely put legacy medias biases on display. When you're supposed to be a facilitator, and explicitly say "we will step in if you interrupt your opponent", you're supposed to do just that. 3 times. THREE very abrupt times, Notley interrupted Smith and talked over her, and the pair of you just silently watched, grinning like a couple of school bullies watching their buddy torment someone. Fortunately, Smith was much too calm and professional for this tactic of reaction baiting. You ended up doing her a huge service by showing how rattled she has you and the NDP. If you're still convinced Notley is a wise choice, after watching her get so worked up over well rounded opposition arguments, going for strawman after strawman, and avoiding confronting her past choices(I found it very rich listening to her blame increased home power bills on the UCP when even a school child can follow the chain of events starting from a NDP lead expedited coal power phase out), then you are 100% only voting based on very basic, juvenile ideology. I trust neither of them to make good decisions, but there's only 1 of them thats been more than willing to own, and learn from, her mistakes. "Integrity" is likely a microaggressive word in the NDP manual.

Whenever Notley was asked “what would she do”, all she said is “I have a plan”, she didn’t outline a plan, didn’t provide ANY details. She CONSTANTLY CHOSE to attack Danielle Smith. Most of her attacks were based on what JASON KENNEY DID & Danielle had to CLEAN UP his mess. In 2015, Notley DID NOT fight for Alberta against Trudeau’s carbon tax, nor did she fight the tanker ban legislation & no pipeline legislation. She has no idea what the Alberta Sovereignty Act is. It’s to STOP Trudeau & Singh from INTERFERING in our provincial jurisdiction & WILL save jobs. Green energy is where jobs WILL BE LOST! Notley has a very SELECTIVE memory. When her & Trudeau implemented the carbon tax, it CHASED AWAY INVESTORS. Now they’re coming back. She helped Trudeau DESTROY Alberta’s economy, 183,000 jobs were lost & MANY Albertans LOST everything!! Trudeau & Singh tried to pull a fast one by burying a MASSIVE increase in Equalization BURIED in the budget, but the Danielle Smith was on top of it with help from the Conservatives & another organization. I have no doubt in my mind that Notley WILL give Trudeau & Singh ANYTHING & EVERYTHING they want, & assist them in SCREWING Albertans like SHE DID in 2015!! I agree with charging people who go to the emergency ward $5.00, because there are people who come for a sniffle & WASTES a doctors time, a takes up a bed. The $5.00 charge would ferret out the people who DO NOT need the emergency ward, when the Walk-in Clinic is where they SHOULD go. Danielle was very professional, poised, articulate, prepared with facts & statistics, unruffled & WILL do a great job representing Alberta & Albertans!!

Right! Every time I see a doctor which is not often, I’m met with an ER room full of people who look dope sick. And I’m told often by doctors and nurses that a MAJORITY of people going to the doctor, had nothing wrong with them. $5.00 is a small amount but I’m watching to see how much it will shift wait times. I’d like to see that figure go up by a few dollars personally but people would scream.

The carbon tax is STILL gonna be present, REGARDLESS of if the provincial government wants it or not. And guess what? You get REBATES from it. Imagine asking the government to take away something that MAKES you MONEY...

@@TheAmazingHoho576 You don't understand how rebates work. You pay CT on every fuel source, and the rebates are a fractional return of your payments. You don't "make money" on the CT.

@@TheAmazingHoho576 you get alot less than what you get back in the rebate, dont be foolish. And notley imposed a carbon tax BEFORE the federal one. Like Smith said in the debate, she gave the federal government the idea of imposing a tax on ALL canadians. Is pierre poilievre is elected, the federal tax will be scrapped as well. Canadians are hurting right now, its not the time for more slush funds to line politicians and their friends pockets.

Notley is looking like she did a line before this debate.. Danielle focuses on issues, notley seems to focus on attacking Danielle for dealing with issues notley created.. lol. Watching notley, how can you trust her? Look at her mannerisms, her body language, her speech. This isn't even a debate. This is what domination looks like in a debate..

I beg to differ. I think it was the opposite way around. Danielle was too calm. Was she on drugs to stay calm? Someone who had her speech written out for her as well as the answers to the questions. Notley may have looked nervous, but she never had someone write her responses to what people want to hear.

Hey Notley. We already have jobs. Lots and lots of jobs. More jobs than we have people. Interesting how Notley immediately moved into attack formation right out of the gates. Pointing fingers and throwing accusations again. She had her chance and she BLEW IT.
