Either way it would've been a good situation for Kawhi: stay with the Raps & try and help defend the championship next season OR choose to play closer to home. Kawhi chose to play back home. Same as John Tavares did when he signed with the Leafs. Kawhi helped lead the Raptors to their 1st championship, that will never be forgotten no matter what. Still will be a fan of his regardless. Kawhi had his eyes on going to LA from the moment he wanted to leave San Antonio, he basically treated Toronto as a 1 year vacation, and he didn’t owe us anything, but he gave us everything he wasn’t drafted by toronto, or had any ties to Canada whatsoever, but he got the job done.

Kawhi ruled out the Raptors a long time ago and was going to the Lakers but told the Clippers he just needed one other superstar preferably PG and he would sign with them instead. I have lived in LA and Toronto and I can tell you they are two universes apart. Canada quite frankly sucks the taxes are high (higher income taxes and sales taxes including 5% federal gst), the weather is awful (ice cold winters and super hot summers), everything from gas to cellphone bills cost more (before the taxes), there is no free speech (Islamophobia, gender pronoun nonsense defined as hate speech in Canada) and no espn or fox sports. Lou Williams also another former Raptor and current Clipper ripped the country for the same reasons he even said it is like playing overseas. Clearly Kawhi agrees that is why he became the first finals mvp in his prime to switch teams after winning a title. Compare this to 2015 when Kawhi was still a Spur and a restricted free agent one summer after Spurs got bounced in the first round by the Clippers if he always wanted to go home he would have signed his qualifying offer and become a ufa in 2016 when the salary cap exploded (make all his money and more) and join the lakers/clippers. He had a problem with Canada and everything about it and its impact on his career off the court so he bolted first chance he got. Canadians should be thankful for the title but both the city and the country are high on their legalized pot if they think they are a destination nation for US Superstar pro-athletes.
