While Canada's official poverty rate is roughly seven per cent, there are many more Canadians than previously thought who cannot afford their basic needs.
The study uses what is known as the material deprivation index (MDI), a metric commonly used in Europe to measure a poverty level standard of living.
Heidi Petracek explains how the new numbers were tabulated, some of the simple things more people cannot afford, and what those new findings could mean as Canada works to address its growing cost of living crisis.

@@rv2167 Immigrants burn out too and become then less productive, so maybe its time to focus on how employees are treated. Treating employees with reasonable pay and time off as in Europe to prevent chronic burnout and productivity decline is critical in my opinion. They are about 25 to 30 percent more productive than us in France and Germany where people actually discuss their concerns as I read. Businesses might benefit immensely too from higher productivity. We can end this chronic burnout cycle that is stagnating the economy and hurting living standards. But we just need to stop doing nothing and make solutions. Just my opinion.

You know why? Because the underlying root problem wasn't addressed. The system of capitalism is inherently unsustainable, unjust and unhealthy. Despite many books and articles that have studied this and offered solutions, people haven't really changed the system, they've just adapted. Well, we can't wait much longer. Late Stage Capitalism is ugly and it's going to get worse unless we do take radical steps to build a better system. But not from the top-down via some political voting campaign. Voting can be strategic when it is available to do, but that's far from the main focus. Main goal is bottom-up social movements that change how we relate to each other. Instead of ruthless capitalism that pits people against people, nature as a source to be exploited for the private profits of the few, we re-orient ourselves into something much more healthy and sustainable: Steady-State, Circular Economics based on NFP worker cooperatives, mutual aid, rebuilding and sharing the commons and deliberative forums. That is already starting but needs more of a platform. A platform like One Small Town based on contributionism provides that for many towns, and it is just starting to take off.

@@robpet4424 Are you seriously being ignorant on purpose? Private ownership of the means of production for profit exist in those countries, as does state capitalism where a small group of state officials dictate policy and manage the returns. That's another aspect of the inequality of global capitalism. State or private capitalism is both unsustainable, unjust and unhealthy. Market trade and profit maximization is inherent to capitalism and inequality and instability is inherent to capitalism as well. Do you want to try and cut social spending in Canada like Pierre and the Cons would do? "Balance the budget", let the billionaires get richer, exploit the working class more, gut universal healthcare and privatize as much as possible? That sounds better to you?

Ive worked as a deckhand on a lobster boat owned by natives, I've see in my time on the water the natives be given access, as they should have access , but over 20 years every traditional heritage Canadian has has their license purchased by the government at above market value, and gets a brown paper bag of cash on the backend to really sweeten the deal. The pay I have received for demanding and dangerous work has remained at nearly the same amount for 20 years, today Im positive if you added up the hours it might be 8 dollars an hour, however it was work and I survived. Now that all the boats are all native owned, and this is the regular commercial fishery, not the contentious use of traditional access in food fisheries. This year I was told I have no more work because I am white and the taxes to do my payroll cost more than to hire a native worker. I am too proud to ever go to a food bank and my grandfather drove a tank through Italy, I grew up watching him march on Nov 11 trying to understand his dedication and solemn demeanor. I have gained alot of perspective, and I'm not sure , infact I'm positive this is not the world he fought to preserve.

They sleep really comfortably in their big, fancy homes, nice beds and secure buildings away from the spit of the people. Just like Pierre and his rich private real estate speculator donors sleep really well at night off taxpayer money that they exploit to gain more wealth and power. It's late stage capitalism. Democracy is for the rich. Rugged individualism is for the working class. Don't you know? Desperate working class people are easier to manipulate and exploit for profits than well-off, stable working class people. And the rich corporate owners, like Galen Weston, they can automate their business and pay even LESS wages and benefits to people to make record profits. If we let capitalism play out, uninterrupted, the billionaires will own just about everything, automate for their own profiteering interests, increase the police state because the people will be angry but they will hire military to protect the rich interests and the people will be kept under the boot of the capitalists. OR, if you don't like that, then you have to think beyond capitalism and move together with others to build a better system, build a social movement for system change from the bottom-up, and not get distracted by political division tactics. Take One Small Town as an example. A bottom-up, voluntary strategy that can bring self-sustainable communities into prosperity for all, not just for the few.

Do you know what is going on? The root cause is the unsustainable anti-economic system itself: market capitalism. That's well documented. From academics like Jason Hickel to Richard Wolff to Tim Jackson and Timothee Parrique, and many more, it is no secret that capitalism is the sickness and is responsible for the cultural decline. The question is for those who know the problem, what pathways to get a viable solution? Hint, hint: It's not hoping benevolent politicians will pop up to save you by voting for them. Voting may happen strategically at the time it is available, but that's a small, small part of the solution. Bottom-up, community oriented mutual aid networks and cooperatives is a big part of the system change solution we need. Can be aided by a platform like One Small Town. And that's just getting off the ground. We could use more of that kind of stuff.

We are being taxed to poverty which is driving out people and businesses with above-average income potential, because they can get a better deal in other countries. food is insane in price. Rent is horrific. I pay with my utilities included $1318.13 roughly for a two bedroom townhouse. It's not bad since I've been living here with my fiance and our daughter for 9 years. However every year the landlord goes the highest rent hike, has turned around and told everyone with conditioners two conditioners now cost 440 together. They refuse to call or write back on questions about the lack of care to their property, our units are sinking to the point my daughters room has a giant crack in the wall. Our plumbing is horrible, my town alone is a joke the money spent here are for head office and very little goes back into the community at all or to projects they keep saying they will do but say in the next 3 7 10 years...... that's the fancy way of saying "we are going to say we will do it, we're not... we just want to get the grants so we can keep it" They are destroying plots and cramming in new apartments saying it's for more affordable housing for the homeless and those struggling ...... how on earth is someone supposed to rent a one bedroom apartment for $1200.00 to $1300.00 !!!! Those prices are up around what I pay for my townhouse and that's not including those who will also need to pay utilities as well as food and living expenses. We don't pay to survive we are paying for the boxes our body is going into the ground... And what's worse is that when we die our families get taxed and are held to pay these astronomical prices just to by law care for their deceased relative.... Look at it this way when you die it's going to cost over 15000.00 .... the government makes off you dying....
